my husband and i are planning a move out to abq from chicago at the end of the summer. we are looking to rent a house...not sure where yet...but probably somewhere on the westside. i am wondering if any of the neighborhoods are in walking distance of restaurants, shops, and so forth. I went to college at unm and am familiar with a lot of the eastside of abq but know very little about the westside. one of the best parts of chicago is being able to walk to the grocery store or have a bottle of wine at a restaurant a couple blocks away.
If you live in the Cottonwood Mall area you can easily walk to shops and restaurants. My only caution to you is the roads in and around Cottonwood were built to get as many cars in and out of the area, it was not designed for pedestrians. That being said, it is walkable as my wife and I have done so as well. Other than Nob Hill in ABQ (near UNM) and Downtown, this would be true in almost all parts of the city. The North Paseo corridor is building up as well with more restaurants and shops near residential developments.
Walk to a restaurant on the westside? Of course. How else would you get from the parking lot to the door?
If you mean walking from your house, a long walk on dirt and gravel punctuated by dashing at top speed across multiple lanes of speeding and swerving traffic under the unforgiving sun would characterize the effort.

This is true everywhere except Nob Hill and Downtown. See my previous post. Trying to cross Montgomery is just as dangerous as crossing Coors.
There is a chinese restaurant (may be named Rose Garden ???) in Ventana Plaza and a 3d Alarm Coffee Shop across the street from the restaurant. Both are walkable from Ventana Ranch, but you would have to cross Unser and that is tricky. It can be a very busy street, with two lanes each direction, and some people drive pretty fast on that one.
The only place I can really think of that is a comfortable walking distance is if you were to find a house right near the juncture of hwy 528/Alameda and Coors/Corrales blvd. There is a shopping center there at that corner with a grocery store (can't recall if that's where Sunflower Market is?), and another center across the street with a couple of nice restaurants, and down Corrales road just a bit you have the flying star cafe. If you aren't set on a house, there are two nice large apartment complexes just a bit south of 528/Alameda off of Corrales Blvd, and you'd be close to all the above mentioned spots.
