Default Foreign Lang. in Elementary Schools

My family will be moving to Albuquerque in July/August of this year. We have two young children; I'd like them to attend a public elementary school that includes foreign language study in its curriculum. Can you recommend any schools that do this? We're looking at living in Rio Rancho, NE Heights and possibly Taylor Ranch area, although I'd be interested in hearing about any elemen. schools around ABQ that have language study. (Primarily we're interested in Spanish, and I'm guessing that would be the most popular language to study in NM, but any foreign language is good.)

Thanks!

I hope someone will be answer this for you. I know that I saw info on a school that had foreign language for elementary students. I think it was one of Albuquerque's charter schools. Maybe on the west side?

Would Spanish be considered a foreign or just a second language?

One of the elementary schools in Bernalillo --maybe Roosevelt-- has a Spanish immersion kindergarten class.

Maybe there's an emphasis on Spanish in other classes. You might want to give them or the district a call.

I recommend calling the school districts. You can find out about the Rio Rancho schools at .: Welcome to Rio Rancho Public Schools :. and find the contact numbers you need. We live in RR and both of my girls have Spanish at school, but just a class. It's my understanding that some of the elementary schools had Spanish immersion (but, that's just what I've heard, I don't know for sure).

Good luck with your move! We just moved here last August and love it!

Unfortunately, in the past attempts by APS to teach elementary school children spanish have been badly funded. It's a real shame in my opinion.

A lot of teachers teach in English and Spanish. Even though they're not certified to do so, they do it anyway. And it's allowed. The constitution of New Mexico states that all students can be instructed in both languages. I currently work at an elementary school and every teacher instructs their students in Spanish various times throughout the day. I believe every elementary school will have at least one class that will teach a good portion in Spanish. I highly recommend you call up the individual schools in your area, and ask.

Very interesting find, Karma. It looks like the school is opening this fall.

I checked the website and they had a lottery back in March. Apparently the classes completely filled up, and there's now a waiting list.
