87110 is definitely pre-2000, I'd say pre-1980 and older in many cases - lots of 70's ranch style houses. My cousins lived in 87110 when we visited in 1975, and they'd been there a while at that point. Going N & E in 87111, you run into the newer part of NE ABQ. My area, 87112, appears to be 1980-1990's construction.

When I moved here in 1985, the intersection of Tramway and Montgomery was undeveloped, but the houses above were built in Glenwood Hills.

Tramway was 2-lane N of Manitoba.

I think of Tanoan West as 1980's and East (of Eubank) as 1990's.

High Desert was started in about 1996, but the apartments were first being erected around 1990.

yukon,

Your post and the off forum personal messages from others sure do make me want to pack-up... NOW. I'm ready! I hope that 87111 is not all that new. My buddy living there is really a draw factor also.

I have been looking at different Real Estate sites, see some in the 87111 zip that really seem reasonable and naturally others that are out of sight. What do you think a 3br/2+bath apartment or house would rent for. Our plan is to rent for a year and then if my asthma can handle ABQ then we are there for good and would then buy.

I was told that I should post my question on the forum about Cost of Living, was/am hesitant but here goes: I'm trying to see what kind of life style we will have trying to live, in the 87111 zip and through out NM, if our in come would be around $66k AFTER TAXES, what do you think? Please remember, that at first we will be spending a lot to get settled in. Then would slow down and work off of our income. We will be bringing some money there, but, certainly not a fortune.

I sure hope I worded the above clear enough for you and others to comprehend and provide some good opinions and advice. See, my problem is that I haven't been back to the states, from the Philippines, except for 2 times. The first time was only for 5 days and the second, last year, for two months. However, where we went was CA and FL and it was as a tourist.

Hope you guys and gals will bear with me during my research, but, this is a BIG step on our part.

Looking forward to your, the forum, replies. Please bring 'em on.

jOE

I would add that some of the most desireable locations in town are circa 1920-1950.

Locate where you are comfortable.

honu1,

Good afternoon (PI time), was just talking to the family and a couple of thoughts popped into my head.

During your time at the ABQ VAMC, did were there very any just out of college, certified Pharmacist?

While there, were there very many Filipino veterans or staff members? My son and daughter speak two languages, English & Tagalog (Filipino). Is that going to be a plus or not at all?

Like always, appreciate you time and your experience.

Good morning back at you. Actually the pharmacist on the Spinal Cord injury unit had been there for some time, and often had folks finishing up school rotating through there to train with her. As I recall, our pharmacist with the Chronic Pain program had also been there a while and also had students training with him. The thing about the VA is that its hard to predict when job openings might be (at least in my experience).

I use USAjobs.com to keep an eye on the federal job abvailability. I just went to the site and typed in pharmacist and a couple of openings at the VA and AFB in ABQ popped up. I know that doesn't help right now, but there were also job announcements in TX, AZ etc. I suspect that if your brood really wants to say in the federal gov't job realm as I do, they will find something, although it may or may not be in the immediate geographic area they desire once you guys get stateside. Its just a little hard to predict. Given their chosen profession, I'm sure they will indeed find a great job though. Keep in mind that ABQ has several other hospitals (UNM-H, Prespyterian, and a few others who's names have started to fade.) so there are other job options as they are starting their careers.

And, no, I've never driven in Saudi of the Phillipines, but the ABQ drivers did scare the heck out of me. There were 10 of us that interns out there together...all moving to ABQ for a year and all 10 of us was rear-ended...1/2 the time the culprit fled the scene. One of the gals also got run over when she was on her bike and ended up at UNM-H. I didn't let it keep me from getting out and exploring the state from top to bottom though.

Oh, and the VA does have interpreters and although I didn't encounter any Tagalog only speakers, being bilingual is always a plus in my book.

My office is in the 87111 zip, off of Tramway & Manitoba. I live in the 87112 zip, so I'm only 2 miles from the office. Some days I bus to work and walk home, it's a nice walk along the trail. Any place in these zips - 87110, 87111, 87112 - is only going to be minutes from your friend's house in 87111. You might have a 15-20 minute drive at most, if you were in the SW part of 87110 for example, and caught all the red lights.

Rents are all over the board here in these zips. Apartments prices are available on various apartment sites (apartments. com, forrrent .com, etc.) You can get a general idea of home rental rates from postings on craigslist and by going to realtor .com, and searching for rentals in the zip codes above. Keep in mind, landlords don't all use craigslist or realtors. I have several tax clients with rental properties, and they usually get their tenants off of For Rent signs in the front yard (which is how I found my place, too).

I don't suggest renting remotely. When you're ready to make the move here, plan on staying in a hotel for a few days or a week, and look around. Neighborhoods and rental quality can change dramatically within blocks on the same street.

Thanks for the clarification, yukon. I guess when I think of older housing stock in Albuquerque I'm thinking pre-WWII.
