My recommendation is going through every single thing in your house and trying to give away what you aren't going to want to pack and bring with you.
I asked around among friends and got all kinds of suggestions. I was able to give away all my canning jars, a huge bin of yarn and one of fabric, record albums, many clay pots, lots of clothes, and several pieces of furniture. The young guy across the street was thrilled to get our refrigerator and microwave. Books (boxes and boxes of them!) went to the local half price book store. Everything else I didn't want to keep but that was in good usuable condition went to the local Catholic Charities organization several blocks from our house. I got to know the guy and he would laugh every week when I showed up with more stuff.
Every single thing I got rid of, I would think to myself "That is more pounds of stuff we don't want to pay to move....or unload when we get there." And ... keep a list ... everything you donate can be claimed on your income taxes.

Excellent advice. I did have a yard sale and sold alot, but I also had more time. Also took alot to Goodwill and other places. Not to mention what we tossed out. I went through my horse supplies and tack and gave what I didn't want to keep to my neighbor's granddaughter.
Went to my mom's this past Sunday and took up a box of foodstuffs that we can't move and was too good to toss. Plus we'd never use it up in just a couple of weeks.
Some things we put on the lawn with a FREE sign and they all got taken to new homes. There are two little boys around here somewhere with a futon bunkbed I am sure they are enjoying.
We needed new living room furniture , no point in moving the old yucky stuff...those went to the dump. We'll buy new when we get to ABQ.
Its surprising how much you can get rid of when you think hard about it. Do you really need it? Can it be easily replaced? Anyway...good luck with the packing and moving. Maybe we can all have an unpacking party.

Congratulations, Soggy!! That's great your house sold so quickly. I know all the stresses you are experiencing with having a million things to do and only 28 days to complete the tasks. Our home in Illinois is currently for sale, and I am here in ABQ exploring and looking for our new home.
Good luck to you.

Thank you everyone for the warm greetings and well wishes. I don't think we'll have time for a garage sale - I am posting some of the bigger stuff on Craigslist - but most will go to charities (Goodwill, St Vincent du Paul, etc) and friends.
And I'm trying, I'm really trying to get rid of stuff. Some are family 'heirlooms' that I won't part with but I'm trying to weed out the others. So far, about half of my totes are photo albums!! Thank goodness for digital cameras!!!

Welcome To New Mexico Soggy
Soggy HURRY and get here as soon as you can New Mexico can stand the Rain like what you brought last time you were here. We are having a Drought and we need you to bring us some rain like last time to put out the Forest Fires and fill our Aquifers. Seattles Loss is New Mexicos gain. My Suggestion was check out the East Mountain Area before you buy anywhere and rent to own before you buy if you can because theres all kinds of Great Deals on Land all over New Mexico and lots cheaper then in the Big Cities. If you like city life expect high Crime and Smog and Traffic and less Friendly people then you meet out in the Country. Also Study a Map of the State and read all the posts in this Group to learn about New Mexico and its people. We are here to help if you have any questions about N.M. Hurry up and get here we need the Rain. I can hardly wait to see how much Snow you bring in the Winter the ski areas close by are gonna love you. pintada kid at webtv.net

Congratulations, Soggy.
Selling your house so soon is a good omen. Things could even get better once you've arrived in NM.
It's a great place. I remember the first sunrise from my new home here. Beautiful.
Here's to an enchanted future for you.
