Thanks for replying ABQConvict. So what do you think a workable budget might be in those areas (or others that you might suggest)? I'm seeing condos in the 600$s on Craigslist. I think they're noted as downtown. I'll be visiting just after Christmas, for a week or so, to check things out. I'd love to move straight from hotel to apt if I can work things out in that week. (Oh I started another thread regarding that question.)

Why are you picking downtown as a place to live?

Personally, I wouldn't live downtown unless I worked there.
Then I would. Gladly.

From your posts, it sounds like UNM Ghetto/Nob Hill is
more suited to your desires, but maybe I've read you
wrong. I've done it before.

Yes I'm focusing on UNM and Nob Hill as best, and downtown got thrown in because of something I'd read. Thanks and I'm fully open to suggestions (Help me please!!) re: where to live. My look-see will begin on Dec 28th, or I'll wait till after the holidays and start on Jan 4th.

Dec 28th is a fine time to visit.
( I don't think that question was answered, BTW. )

Suggestions:

Stay in Nob Hill. Walk around.

Take a bus to downtown. Walk around.
Take a bus to uptown. Walk around.
Take a bus to oldtown. Walk around.

Ride the Railrunner to Santa Fe. ... Same program/different town.

I wouldn't rule out taking the bus to Socorro or Las Cruces ...
I wouldn't rule out taking the bus to Taos ...

See if you can rent a bike in Nob Hill and ride the bike trail to Tramway Rd.

Oh yeah ... ask around for authentic, local cuisine and read the
restaurant threads on city-data to get educated on places/food.

Or Uptown. Walking distance to restaurants and grocery store (Trader Joes), plus access to multiple bus routes at the Uptown Transit Center.
