Tat is on a distinguished road
Hi... I was just reading this thread - late, I know. LOL!

I live about 2 blocks north of Kathryn, between San Mateo/San Pedro. It's a very spotty neighborhood. You can go 2 streets over and find gang activity and shootings. My particular street is very quiet, however. I probably wouldn't go strolling down Kathryn at night, but believe it or not, 2 blocks north can make a big difference. Then 2 blocks north of me is Zuni. Again, not a great street or area, but I'm kind of surrounded, I guess. I've lived here for 8 years and have never had a problem (knock on wood)...

Welcome to Albuquerque! You'll find the Good, the Bad, AND the Ugly!

Thanks Tat! =)

I've been biking to school (Alvaredo --> Copper --> UNM) this week, and I've been asked if I was married (from a guy crossing the crosswalk) and today some guys yelled out of their car, "Watch the streets, BABEEEE!!!!"). lol. I also took the Rapid Ride today to San Mateo from campus, and I made friends with the bus driver. He "clued" me in on all the safety issues. I'm not going to be riding around that area at night ... though maybe Ridgecrest would be nice and safe. I'm going to try some other flat routes to campus. But, so far, biking to campus has been totally fine!

Umm ... it's not like I'm riding in heels or anything! Bermuda shorts, helmet, t-shirt and shoes .. nothing too spectacular. Maybe it's 'cause I'm blond?

I never meant to make you sound like a "cat." lol

Maybe I'll ride the same route you do and see if I get any attention.

I know .. =) I'm now going Southern (through residential districts) to Silver to campus .. it's better than dealing with signals and lots of traffic. Though the last two days I've been taking the bus back to San Mateo (and making friends with the bus drivers -- very friendly!).

I've noticed there is a friendly bike culture here .. smiles, waves, and nods from bikers to me ... I guess bikers are happy to see fellow bikers? It's nice and welcoming. And sometimes I just want to follow other bikers in case they have a better route than me! =)

Are you a commuter type cyclist or road cyclist (or both)? If you think you're up to it, many cyclists like to ride from Tramway out east toward Moriarty/Edgewood.

I am definitely NOT a Lance Armstrong cyclist. =P I never cycled until I moved here .. and cycling 5 days a week is new and weird for me. That's not to say I won't become a cyclist, but right now I am a commuter cyclist. On a comfortable bike. =)

You are in the right city for becoming a great cyclist.

My dad tells me stories about meeting Lance Armstrong at a cycling race out near Moriarty/Estancia (of course this was back in the 80s/90s). lol

We usually buy our bicycles from Bike World on San Mateo (the bald guy who works there/runs the place is very nice and very talented!).

I'm sure you're saving a pretty penny by not driving.
