Funny, but we've also been looking in all the same areas as well, and very curious to check out Tijeras as the houses are good value there. (Good point about not living too close to the freeway though.)

However, we googled "urgent care" in that area and nothing popped up. Are there any 24hr emergency centers in the East Mountains in case of an accident? Or do you have to go west over the hill? Thanks.

If you need urgent care in the E mountains, my understanding is you are SOL.

I have even heard that there is ONE ambulance for the entire area.

Safety definitely depends on where you are on Tramway. South Tramway is not horrible, but it definitely is worse than further north. The rule of thumb that we learned from long-time residents was to focus in the far NE heights east of Wyoming, and North of Montgomery. Unfortunately, this is also some of the most expensive housing in the city.

We just moved here a couple of years ago, and also looked at Corrales (very nice but expensive), and East Mountains (beautiful, but with a lots of pockets of meth activity and generally poorer services). We rented a small house in High Desert just east of Tramway & Spain. The area was definitely safe and nice. High Desert was a bit too "scrubby" (in terms of vegetation) for our tastes, but we found a nice neighborhood near Academy & Tramway just east of Tanoan East more to our liking. It's definitely safe. We are near a lot of desirable stores and services and can generally easily avoid the highways.

BTW, there is a weekday ABQ express bus that connects the neighborhoods around us to downtown that may be an option for you. Actually, the drive down on Tramway to I-40, and then to downtown is not bad if it's timed properly (on average <30 minutes before 7AM and after 9AM). I think that driving from Tijeras or Corrales would be about the same or worse.

Good luck!
