Default NE Tramway, Corrales, Tijeras or Los Ranchos de Albuquerque--safest?

Hi everyone-

Just wondering which of these areas you would consider to be the safest:
The NE Heights near Tramway; Tijeras; Corrales; or Los Ranchos de Albquerque.

My husband will be working downtown and I will be working somewhere....(I'm a social worker)

We are trying to pick a good area. We are going to be renting and I have not found any rentals in Tijeras. I found Sage Cove Apts in Los Ranchos and a few complexes off Paseo del Norte in NE Heights.

I would appreciate any comments!! Thank you!!!

Default About the ABQ Area

My choice of what you listed would be Tijeras but it is a choice area to live so doesn't surprise me that there aren't any listings. I used to drive out by there everyday when I lived in Moriarty and it is a nice area. Cedar Crest is nice too. It is a mountain area and generally colder then ABQ but I like it. My next choice would be the Tram area. I also have a friend in ABQ who lived in San Miguel Del Bosque Apartments on Coors Bvd out near the Paradise Hills Golf Course and it was pretty nice. He liked it until he bought a condo and moved out near the tram. Also there are other apartment complexes out in that area and it isn't far from the Cottonwood Mall. I don't know about Corrales or Los Ranchos, maybe someone from there will respond and let you know.

Before I bought my house I was renting in the NE Heights area and the rents are on the expensive side - $800 to $1000 for a 2 bedroom - (these are really nice complexes though, gated, swimming pools, excercise facilities, biking and jogging trails) lots of people who work at Kirtland AFB rent up in that area so the commute for your husband into downtown shouldn't be too bad.

You won't find any rentals in Corrales or Tijeras, maybe a stray house.

You may want to check out anywhere on the Westside (the big I-40 - Coors interchange just opened to help with traffic flow) that area is booming and you shouldn't have any trouble finding rental complexes or even some town houses for rent.

Once the rail runner opens this fall, your husband can ride into downtown from the Bernalillo station. That opens up Rio Rancho as another option for rentals (Rio Rancho is really booming).

Best of luck in your search...

Gaby, Tramway is a long road, and you don't say where your husband will be working downtown. As for safety, the areas you are asking about are relatively safe, but as Tramway runs most of the length of the city north to south, its safety really depends on where on Tramway you are thinking about.
Informer is absolutely correct in saying that Tijeras/East Mountains has next-to-no rentals. Corrales will be similar.
BTW - Welcome to the area.

Can someone explain what the tramway is? I am moving to RR in 6 weeks and don't know the area that well in Albuquerque. All of my visits have been to family in Santa Fe. thanks.

If you are talking about Tramway Bvld? It the road that runs on the far east of town and pops out on the north end of Albuquerque. It connects I-40 to I-25 with quite a few traffic lights, and quite a long drive time. Check out a map.
If you are talking about the tramway check this link:

It's a difficult match, finding a good safe neighborhood coupled with available apartments. Apartments by definition tend to be occupied with folks less committed to a long-term stay than condos or homes.

My guess for the safest of the four would actually be Corrales. Tijeras is high-value but it does have a lot of through traffic, which often carries a criminal element. Los Ranchos has significant spillover from north 4th street, so similar problems there. Many NE heights apartments off Tramway also have criminal element problems, as has been discussed on this board. Apartments in High Desert (Tramway & Academy) should be far safer than those further south.

To the west of Corrales, on Corrales Road just before reaching Alameda, there's an attractive apartment complex. This might be a possibility for you.

I'm considering retirement in the Tijeras area but don't want jets flying over head all the time. Is this the situation for this area?

There are some nice Apartment Complexes by La Cueva High School, there is Broadstone and Pinnacle. One is off of Wyoming Blvd north of Paseo Del Norte, and the other is off of Barstow Blvd north of Paseo Del Norte.
