Default Could an artsy liberal person be happy in ABQ?

Hello,

I'm tired of expensive NYC and need to move someplace dry for my health.
I've been to ABQ and found the natural settings beautiful. But what about the neighborhoods?

Are there liberal neighborhoods? Would a liberal, artsy type person feel comfortable there.

It's my impression that the typical "artsy, liberal person" would likely be pretty far to the right of many Albuquerque residents..

I am the Republican Borg. You shall be assimilated.

Of course you fit right in, and more importantly, you would feel welcome here. One of the unique things about our city is that we ignore politics in favor of the type of person you are. If you are friendly and hardworking, you will be accepted and find many friends just like you regardless of your political affiliation.

Hubcap -

I moved from NYC about a month ago. I am a lesbian, in a mixed-race relationship. We feel far more comfortable here than we did in many parts of NY! I have never gotten a bad vibe out here, and while we aren't "in your face," we don't make a secret of our relationship, either. My wife is an artist who works from home, and everyone in the neighborhood is fine with us, they come over to chat when we're walking our dog, etc.

We're decidedly lefty, and while I have been surprised by how many people in my workplace seem to support McCain, there is a fair leavening of Obama supporters and no one fights. There's been some discussion around the lunch table, but it's all pretty respectful. It's my impression that anywhere in NE you'd probably be okay, but that's from a newbie, and there may be areas that I don't know about.

Get out of expensive NY! I went down to the shelter today and got my dog a license for six bucks! I'm going to the State Fair this weekend for $9 - and we have coupons! What's the point of living in NY if you can't afford all its amenities?

Not sure what YOUR definition of liberal is, but I'm liberal and fit right in. My office mate is a Republican and we have some good discussions about politics and government. I'd describe ABQ as moderate with liberal undertones.

An artsy liberal can definitely be happy in Albuquerque. I know plenty of them, most of whom are involved in academia in some way. I'd be willing to wager that Bernalillo County is one of the most 'mixed' counties out there-- it's about half liberal and half conservative-- but everyone is perfectly respectful of their neighbors' views.

Thank you for the great replies!
And by 'liberal' I meant it in a more general sense. Tolerant, open minded--
and it sounds like folks have that in ABQ. Thank you.

You will have no problem fitting in. I came from Chicago and its very cut throat and judgmental in Chicago. In Albuquerque people accept you a lot easier and are far more liberal. If you don't like Albuquerque you can always move to Santa Fe lol j.k
