Hi Victorie, I'm not all that familiar with the switch over from military to private care, but hope I might help just a little; If I understand you correctly
Is it that or If it is that, you need to find a physician for yourself now? A Civy?
Do you have any civilian friends/co-workers who could recommend their own Physician to you?
Women sometimes have only their OB/GYN physician. But really need like a "Family/General physician" {too}. That, could be your primary care one.
If it is that you don't know anyone or anyone to ask, *I* would go to the nearest decent hospital. They ususally have a doctor's offices complex, connected with the facility. They have a registry usually on the wall or receptionists desk, with All the doctors listed.
Check out the names and their practice specialties, get the office/suite/room number....and walk on into their office and talk with the front desk people. Get a feel if you like them.
Ask if they are taking new patients.
Check out if they can be involoved in what your insurance requires.
If they accept your insurance.
You might even be able to see the doctor for a introduction/hand-shake {only}
Many people get a word of mouth referral from friends or co-workers. {which I think you hope to get here}
But I think you might- that's- might, have to SEE any primary care doc. at the time or before you list him/her as your primary care physician.
A "Family or General practioner" is what I think you are looking for.
Check the yellow pages too for State or county physician *referral service*, under Physicians. Many decent sized towns have such a service. Talk with them.
You could also start by phone with the help of the Yellow pages and the Family/General practice section. And Call each one and talk to them on the phone.
See whom sounds good to you and for your needs.
Ask them how you should proceed- is a visit necessary? Just list the doctor's name only as your Primary on your insurance and that's it? Will your name be put into the doctor's patients list? So if you have an emergency and you call, will they respond- affirmatively?
Call or go in directly to an office to meet them, a choice you'll have to make.
Fingers or feet
I hope I've helped some, with some Ideas for you, to help a bit; and that I understood your question
Hopefully others will come along here too and pitch in some names or something, Ok

Give it a bit more time.
Good Luck!
