While not authoritative, here is an interesting blog posting from Duke City Fix concerning the 'Burque' phenomenon.

¡Burque! - Duke City Fix

I recommend reading the comments too which also delve into the pachuco/cholo debate.

There seem to be a lot of people in Albuquerque with a loose grasp of the terms which I know as:

Pachuco - A resident or descendant of El Chuco (El Paso). Later, a latino dandy.

Cholo - A person of Native American descent who speaks spanish but no native language. An Indian who has lost their indigenous culture. Later, a latino involved in the gang-culture and its signifiers (clothing, slang)

The Albuquerque baseball team was called the Dukes back in 1915.

It's not clear how many years the Browns played, but in 1915 the first recognized professional baseball team in Albuquerque took the field. The "Dukes" played in the Class-D Rio Grande Association against teams from Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, and nearby Las Cruces. The Dukes finished in third place with a 32-25 record. They also had the league leader in home runs, as Frank Huelman hit 10 long balls.

I have a great idea, let`s make a combination of the two names and let`s call it "Durque" or "Burduke" or "Durbuke" or "Burqueduke" or "Dukeburque" and even better let`s just call it ALBUQUERQUE which sounds 10000000000000000 times better than any of those and even better than "Burque" or "Duke" which by the way they sound like NOTHING at all. If stick to Albuquerque than it will be remembered as a beautiful city but the other names remind me of zero events. Ok now, where are the hot ones???

just because one person likes to eat big meals and does not have good looks, does not mean everyone else is the same!
