ABQ suburbs with descriptions...
Which would you say would be the place for a newish community, family-friendly with the Target, grocery and light shopping, movies and basic restaurants and good schools. I don't mind driving about 30 mins each way to work. I'm a Paralegal and guess I'd be working downtown. Looking for 3 bedrooms for under $1500 or $180K. Is this realistic?

Unlike where you're coming from, there aren't so many suburbs here. Parts of the metro area are more correctly separated by neighborhood.
There's a mentality among the locals in New Mexico that Californians like to come here to escape the California rat-race high-cost-of-housing high-cost-of-living fashion-status-conscious heavy-traffic three-hour-commute and turn the places they arrive into the exact place they left.
Recommend you look at older neighborhoods, many of which are 70's and 80's era houses and should meet your price range. You could try Lomas & Eubank area. Nice and close to shopping, 10-15 mins to downtown.
There are new apartments south of there too.
Maybe if you could say why you have to have new, it would help people guide you.

WOW! What reactions...
RSM isn't exactly new. My place is more than 20 years old, and frankly, I'd rather have something new. Is that a crime? I've lived in a lot of places (3 different countries), and I think I could almost be happy anywhere that's relatively safe and affordable with good public education. I'm so sick of the anti-CA sentiment everyone has. If you had any idea how our state has changed since I was born here in the 70's. Trust me, we know 1st hand what the urban sprawl leads to, and understand why you're not happy your burgs are subject to it, but they are. That's just how it is!
I'm sure you'll be happy about this, but I doubt ABQ is where I'll end up if you're any indication of the (lack of) friendliness of the population there!
By the way, the law firm where I work in Irvine is business casual, and it only takes me 20 mins to get to. There's not anyone here that's on TV and we all haven't had plastic surgery. It's definitely the high home prices and growing population that I'd have to say I'm escaping from.

Hold on.
No. It's not a crime to want new construction. You're just perpetuating the stereo-type of your region. Keeping up with the Jones'... which are financially ruined by the way.
People here are easily jaded by new-comers. All we are told by outsiders is that ABQ does not have enough amenities, jobs, etc. To many of us you're just another CA trying to escape the problems you've created (not a personal insult to you). You (CA's in general) want this to be done... or that to be built... or wouldn't it be nice if ABQ had a Nordstroms. Lord help me if I hear one more person rave about Sephora.
We're a very friendly place... I think you'll find that you'll get the answers you need from this forum... although you may not like what you're reading.
I hope you can understand why we don't want CAs problems.
Geez... Rant over... flame-suit on.

I think you're the one perpetuating stereotypes... I can live without Nordstrom's or Sephora. Hell, I've live in a hut on an island before! I'm just looking for the best my money can buy, and you're right, it isn't much in this economy...
If you forgot, this is a relocation board, and those of us posting are considering moving to your area. If you don't like people moving in, I suggest you avoid these boards and find some good soft sand to stick your head in!

Yes. This is a relocation board. It doesn't mean we have to be pro-relocation. I'm just telling you how it is.
I'm only one person. I'm sure there are others on this forum that will welcome you with open arms.
I think you'd really like ABQ... it's a great little town.

Well, your budget probably won't get you a new build on the Eastside, but both the Westside and Rio Rancho would probably fit your requirements and price range. If you feel like spending a little more, it might be well worth it to look in the Northeast heights.

Most of the places I can think of require a longer commute (i.e. Rio Rancho, which would take you longer than 30 minutes, and would still be at the top of -- or over-- your price range) or much more expensive (far up northeast near paseo del norte, which would run you at least 250k). You're best bet is to try to prioritize your budget, desire for a newish house, commute time, and school district because you're not going to be able to get everything you want.
