IT Jobs
My husband and I are looking into possibly moving to NM from the Washington DC area. My line of work is in IT. I was wondering what the IT job availability was like out there. Thanks!

Albuquerque is a very high tech city. Your possibilities range from Sandia or Los Alamos Labs, Intel, HP, Northrup Grumman, GE, Schott Global, Honeywell, TempurPedic, Eclipse Aviation if it rebounds, etc.

What sort of IT? That's a really too broad a description to be meaningful.
Web designer? LAN administrator? Data entry clerk? CAD/CAM? Mainframe maintenance programming?
All of those and far, far more are "IT" jobs.
FWIW, I spent almost 25 years in "IT" jobs ranging from programmer trainee to senior business analyst / project manager
managing all the technical aspects of a 2 billion dollar telecom acquisition.
I'm not trying to be overly harsh, but before anyone here can help they need a better idea of what you
are looking for.

Sorry, I was typing this post as I was walking out the door to catch my bus home. That's life in the DC area...can't even drive into work anymore But as for IT jobs, I would be looking for a Network Admin position. I will be coming out there with a degree in Computer Networking and Microsoft certifications. What pay range can one expect?

Also, to throw in another question, what is the commute like in the surrounding areas? I only live 20 miles from Washington DC but if I drive in, I would have to leave my house by 6:00 to be at work by 8:00 and that's if there aren't any accidents on the highway.

It's awful. Right now I take the bus to work which takes an hour each but it's better than driving. I was actually working 6:00-2:30 to catch the HOV lanes into DC but getting up at 4:30 every morning is really rough. My husband and I work in the same office and we calculated yesterday that it costs us around $5000 per year to take the bus to work. I was about sick.

My wife and I moved here 3 1/2 years ago from New Jersey, she is a Programmer Analyst and she found her job at UNM before we moved. Bookmark UNM's website, I know they are on a hiring freeze at the moment but that won't last forever.
