Thanks to all of you who take the time to post all your thoughts. My husband needs a warmer, dry climate for health reasons. I work for the state of Missouri but hope to go back to work in healthcare. We live in Kansas City but think that ABQ would be a good choice for us next winter. I will continue to monitor this site for comments that may help us with our final location choice. Keep those comments coming.

Rio Rancho has the lowest crime rate in the state and the majority of people move here for the school system that is also the best in the state. Taxes are a bit lower than Abq as well, and pricing for homes to rent or buy are at a low presently. We moved to the NE Heights (ElDorado cluster for schools) last June and we love it. We have three young kids and feel very safe. The schools in this cluster are rated highly enough that as long as we do our job as parents our kids should be fine(in general as they do have some choice in the matter).

I am glad you are acknowledging the responsibility of parents. Too many worry about the quality of the school, yet take no responsibility for their kids. I have been involved in the matter, and I've seen well educated kids coming from "bad" schools and some not well educated kids coming from "good" schools. I think even more important than the school is the amount of involvement the parents have in a kid's life. Showing interest, helping with homework, keeping in contact with teachers...these have a gigantic impact in the educational growth of a child. Too many parents blame the school. It's the easy way out.

I live in an area known as Taylor Ranch we are about 5 minutes from Ventana Ranch and about 5 minutes from Interstate-40. We have never had a problem with crime and I feel very very safe here. We are right next to the beautiful petroglyphs and there is plenty of outdoor fun right outside our door. Most of the people in our neighborhood are retired so they are always home and definitely looking out for one another. Your husband would be able to get to the KAFB in about 20 minutes. My husband used to work there so he knows the commute well. We are moving in a couple months and putting our house for rent. Let me know if you are interested. : )

I can't move until after October when I will be fully vested with the state of Missouri but after October 10th we will start to get serious about our possible move. Thanks for the ideas.

We lived in the Venana Ranch area for about a year and a half. Its a great community and our daughter loved Ventana Ranch Elementary. It's not too far from Rio Rancho either so it's close to everything. There were quite a few military families there also.

Around the CNM or UNM area. There is plenty of inexpensive choices in that area.
