Hey pally, you might want to at least get your terminology correct if you are going to post stuff like this. Albuquerque *DOES* have "pro sports teams" - Triple A baseball, minor league hockey, the NBDL, etc. You are talking about "major league" sports teams. Big difference.
And buddy, I have lived in Milwaukee (with the NBA and MLB along with essentially the NFL) and Denver (with all four), and Albuquerque is every much the city that each of those places are.
If you are judging a city v. "town" by its "pro" [sic] sports teams, well, then it is *you* my friend, that doesn't get out much.
Tell Las Vegas, NV that they aren't a *city* or Austin, TX that they aren't a *city*...they'll laugh Pittsburgh out of the picture...

I respect your opinion on your take on ABQ. Deciding on where I want to live because it’s association with a professional sport team will not be a factor. Not only are my wife and I considering NM, but also RDU area of NC. This area is rich in college basketball history which I am a big fan of. But to say that I will only move there because of it affiliation to college basketball is silly. Not to knock you, but it doesn’t sound like you have a family or kids to take into consideration. My decision will not be based on the proximity to sporting event, bars, people, etc… My decision will be based upon affordable housing, school, work, and depending how my son makes out with his special needs he currently receiving, but also ABA services if further needed. At my age of 36, I’ve done and experienced everything the Big Apple has to offer. But I’m done with it. My life moving forward is about finding happiness through other events that don’t necessarily include nightlife or sporting events. When we moved to my currently location, I hated it. I went from having a grocery store across the street from me, to having to drive five minutes to get milk. Trust me I'm sure ABQ isn't as bad.

I submit that for some of us leaving a city with pro (major league, etc.) is difficult if you are a big sports fan. It was one of the most difficult things (just about the only difficult thing!) I have found about living here.
I am (was) a big Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals fan, and loved going to the games. I can get NFL games here, but have not had a Chiefs game on any of my TV stations since I moved here. I know I won't ever see another Royals game on TV again. I guess I took our teams for granted when I lived in Kansas City.
I also am a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of the Kansas Jayhawks -- I probably love the Jayhawks as much as EnjoyEP loves ABQ. I only saw two football games this past year and I have missed some of the basketball games even though I have a sports package on DirectTV.
I will watch the Lobos and maybe go to some basketball games in the future, but it is not the same. I will go to see the Isotopes play this summer and I will enjoye it a lot because I love baseball, but it is not the same as seeing the MLB team you have loved for 28 years.
Leaving behind my sports teams was the hardest thing about moving here. I would not have made my choice any differently because I LOVE living in New Mexico every single day, but is IS something for a big sports fan to consider.

Las Vegas? lol lol lol An overgrown tourist town is ALL Vegas is! You're really trying to say that Vegas is somehow a 'real' city? lol lol lol It's takes more than cookie cutter suburbs and trailer parks to be a 'real' city!
Let someone from "Austin" laugh at Pittsburgh. There's WAY more history and culture in Pittsburgh than Austin. Where was Austin 100 years ago, hey even 50 years ago, even 20 years ago? lol lol Another place just like San Antonio, leave the place, 5 minutes you "fell off the face of the earth"! What was phoenix 50 years ago? Central air is the ONLY way those places even exist!
Milwaukee "essentially has the NFL"? By that, I guess you mean you can watch it on tv?... .....

And by grocery stores, you probably mean 'bodegas' when talking about NYC. Move out west, and post the differenes on here 'after' you do. If you like it, 'God bless you'. The OP, doesn't seem like he will though. He seemed pretty excited about it, but after the visit? Me personally, I was actually 'taken back' by how DISAPOINTED I was about ALB. To me, it felt kinda of dirty and dumpy, along with some dirty looking people. The local newpapers or flyers had alot of 'smut' in them also. In fact, I went back to Chicago and had a friend look thru them, he even made the comment about ALB seeming "seedy". I promise you that I made no comment on ALB before he read and looked thru those papers. He appartenly was very perceptive and keen on these type of things. He also a Chicago cop though........

You need to get out of pitt more often. Not every grocery store is a bodega or owned by Spanish person in NYC. As a Puerto Rican I’m actually offended by this bias comment. It’s like saying every afro American dines @ that popular fast food joint.

Funny thing, I'm posting FROM NYC as we speak!..... Grocery stores, or what most people are use to seeing elsewhere, are far and few between HERE in NYC. Bodegas are more popular for "grabbing a gallon of milk", than running into a "grocery store". Supermarkets are even HARDER to find HERE!
P.S. You're offended? lol lol lol Why? Cause I firgured you grabbed your milk from a bodegas as opposed to an actual "grocery store"? lol lol You must offend VERY easy. Are you sure you're really a NY'er?

Moving to NM
NM is a good "base" if you have the means to travel. I have lived here most of my adult life, but I leave the city every 3mo or so just to get to a big city. You will feel culture shock here, especially coming from Chicago! Good luck to you.
