As a kid, I went to a school that had absolutely *no* "hot lunch" or school-provided lunch program...WHATSOEVER. None. Zero. Zilch.

Once a week - on Wednesdays - if you / your parents came up with the dough and the foresight to *gasp!* - pre-order on Tuesday - you could order McDonald's (not exactly the envy of all of the diet-conscious do-gooders of today).

But that was it. Otherwise, you had no school abilities even to provide a lunch.

And it was amazing...even for the poorest among us, you never had a kid show up at school without a lunch.

Amazing what not having a "fall back option" does for parents. All of a sudden - wallah! - there was a lunch sack full of a lunch, even for kids / parents (and I was damn well in this group) that didn't have exactly a plethora of salary coming in.

Boo-effin-hoo. This story makes me laugh as I am very familar with cheese sandwiches. Lived off them (and PB & J) for many months. Did I love them? No. I got so sick of them it inspired me to grow up and get out and prosper.

I am repulsed by people who think their children deserve top quality, heated meals just because they are "impoverished". Can't afford to feed extra mouths, don't make any!

Zero sympathy here.

I usuallys took a sack lunch, usually peanut butter, bologna or tuna sandwiches and a little bag of chips, and maybe a cupcake. Otherwise, one had to buy his food in the cafeteria, and it was usually not equal to the sandwiches. There was no 'free food'. fnord, part of me thinks you're too harsh, but the other part agrees. A steady diet of cheese sandwiches must be rather depressing to the kids, and if that's what they have to deal with, the other meals in their diet must be even less nutritious and appealing. I'm pretty much on the fence, but the kids shouldn't be penalized.
