In the Cause of Imagination: Bart Prince Architecture (FRIDAYflashback) - Duke City Fix (http://www.dukecityfix.com/profiles/blogs/in-the-cause-of-imagination - broken link)
I'm not impressed with Bart Prince. At all. Especially his works in some of New Mexico's more scenic natural areas. There is nothing like driving through a beautiful canyon enjoying the amazing geologic formations, the sinuous curve of the river, the pine branches swaying in the wind... Then coming upon a house that looks like a bunch of Airstream trailers welded together at odd angles.
Sorry, does nothing for me, either. I've always held the belief that the building should fit the land. Doesn't mean you're locked into one style, but that the style and land should be in harmony no matter what style you build.

What I think can be taken away from learning about Bart, is that he truly cares about design. Every single detail is thought through.
You need to immerse yourself in the different ways he plays with light and volume... every space exists for a reason.
He's an architect for architects, who cares what the masses think.
I will say that I appreciate Bart Prince's loyalty to his vision, I just wish he wouldn't inflict it on the rest of us ;-)
Over the years, the Monte Vista house (which kids I knew used to call "The Nautilus" (after Jules Verne) has receded into the trees. Too bad, I think it is his most interesting and appealing local work. Then he got into the shiny aluminum siding / futuristic European pay-toilet look.
