City-Data is only one place to find crime statistics but for 2007, the crime index in SLC was 672 and in ABQ it was 578. So you may have felt safer in SLC, but you probably weren't. Different sites vary on how they track crime, but on the ones I checked, ABQ appears safer than SLC.
All of your posts seem to indicate that you are very unhappy here. I hope you are able to move soon.

I guess you answered your own question. It's the same.
People hear something "happened" in some place ( pick one )
and come to a baseless conclusion.
I know someone who thought the whole state of Colorado was full
of nut cases because of the Columbine shootings. He pronounced
that he'd never move to such a terrible place.
Of course, he doesn't read or watch the news because "there
isn't anything he can do about it, so why bother being informed."
He gets all his information from television docu-dramas and fiction.
I'm sorry to report that I'm related to him.

Now rybert - behave.
These forums are open to all. 80skeys merely was making an "observation"
and I called him out on his "random sampling."
I have no problem with people posting actual statistics that show
Albuquerque, Santa Fe, New Mexico, whatever in a bad light - crime-wise
===> if they're true.
I just don't see the point.
I wouldn't use "crime" as a factor in any relocation decision -- ever.
I would use weather, cuisine, beer, layout, availability of recreation, etc.

You can only say that because you have never lived in Oakland or Richmond , CA! You might just change your stance if you lived there for a year or two.

On the other hand, maybe not. Like, for example, there's a few people in the colorado forum who seem to think Junction is real "unsafe and crime ridden." I just don't see it, myself. I bet if you were to ask almost anyone here, they wouldn't see it, either. I've said as much in response to those folks' postings.

You are doing the same thing to the ABQ/NM forum. I wouldn't expect the locals of Grand Junction to accept any negative comments from a New Mexican. Especially, vague, trollish, unfounded comments.

No. I don't have to have personal experience with those specific places.
I have to have specific experience with life, in general:
I know that if I am on a street and the place has a "bombed-out" look and no one
is on foot except people that I don't want to get anywhere near, it's not safe.
I don't even have to know where I am.
I know that even if I'm out at odd hours and there are throngs of people around, it probably is.
I know that I can be pick-pocketed at any time.
I know not to match "hard" stares from people.
I know that there is no assurance that I'll ever be safe all the time. ==> even in my house with my Colt .45 on my lap.
Also, Oakland and Richmond as well as San Francisco and San Jose are really part of The Bay Area. I'm not sure about Richmond, but there ARE nice areas in Oakland - as well as bad areas.
Even if you get a job in Richmond or Oakland, you are not limited to living in THOSE specific places. You ARE limited to living in the Bay Area and can find a place that you will find decent. ( Not to be confused with the descent places all over Richmond. )
The same goes for New York and Albuquerque. ... and Indianpolis ... and Atlanta ... and Anchorage ... and ...

Some people (not me) just never seem to grasp that concept. There are other minor body language movements that just seem to cause people to say " I don't know why (enter a victums statement), I wasn't doing nuthin...."

Alright let me be more clear and set the record straight.
The "common perception" among people up here about "Albuqerque" is that it is a rough place. Whether this is true or not, Albuquerque definitely has this reputation.
I don't normally post outside of Colorado, but this weekend's news had a story about a shooting down there, and so I went onto the albuquerqe forum to read some of the posts.

I lived in Richmond, Ca. for several years, in what's arguably, the only "nice" part of town ( Richmond Marina ) and know plenty of people who live in the "good" parts of Oakland. Since my father is a native of Richmond, I've been back several times and driven through the "old neighborhood" for a bit of nostalgia. I feel perfectly safe there in the daytime but would not venture into parts of it at twilight/night. I can say the exact same thing about parts of Albuquerque, Allentown, Phila area, Newark area...all places where I've lived. There's been no difference, other than the percentage of safe/safer areas to those that are dangerous.

When I was in Columbia, SC (about three years ago) it seemed about as big as Pueblo, CO. Albuquerque seems much larger by far and has more of an urban feel than Columbia. I find it hard to believe that Columbia has a larger population than ABQ.
