Family housing seemed fine to me, great location.
This sounds like good advice.

I'll also agree with the suggestion for the neighborhood around Monte Vista elementary school which is immediately north of the Nob Hill / UNM border. There are fewer rentals in this area and it is likely to be more expensive but it is a great location with nice houses.

As far as the "Student Ghetto" vis-a-vis family-friendly status, there are several young families here, many of my acquaintance, who love the area and are happy to raise their kids here. The local bus-stop to bring kids to elementary school is outside of the Peace and Justice center and there are usually 8 or 10 kids there.

If any further proof of child-habitation in this area is needed, come to Winnings Coffeeshop on the weekend. It is a stroller parking lot inside and out.

You mean the 2 year long wait list... LoL... No I haven't signed up yet, but might as well, no telling how long my stay at UNM will be, but could come in handy even afterwards... I'm just so impatient

You never know - it could go faster, so go ahead and get on it. I hear its a great place. In the meantime, I am not sure about headstart (I assume there is a program, just don't know the contact info). I don't think APS has much in the way of K4/pre-K programs (maybe some pilot programs), so you might want to start looking around at private stuff through churches/etc...If you look at the online version of New Mexico Kids magazine, there might be some ads or listings for fall preschool programs/openings.

I would sign up, there are plenty on the list who do not take advantage of it when it is their turn. I am an example of that.
