UNM Housing
Hi! Love the discussions and answers on the board...
Hopefully I'll be a transplant to ABQ in Aug. for my enrollment at UNM. Anyone here familiar with the student family housing on campus? Do you live there or know someone that does? Have any pictures?
Any info would help. TIA

Unless it has changed, I would just rent a house in the neighborhood. More privacy, more 'real', closer to neighborhood amenities and probably cheaper or at least competitive with student housing.

Thanks for the links... Live maps bird's eye view option is awesome...
I have checked out all the info UNM has on their site and am on the waiting list...
Why do you all suggest otherwise? Is the housing even designated for families considered bad?
*Edit*
I just ran across a post from Jan. 08! UNM and Albuquerque... ABQConvict and mortimer you both gave very good, detailed answers. It pays to do back searches... a lot of questions have already been discussed...thoroughly

Do you have kids or are you looking for just housing as a grad student/married student?
You might like the student family housing if you have kids b/c of things like the playgrounds. I have a friend that lived there while going to UNM as a single parent and she really liked it.
You could also look to rent north of Central in the Monte Vista neighborhood and around north campus. Monte Vista Elem and Jefferson Middle school are in that neighborhood and are well-liked.
I think the student "ghetto" (roughly the area just south of Central that runs from about University to Girard) is fine for student, even married students, but I am not really sure if its that family oriented for young kids? Like I said, I am not sure.
If I wanted to be near campus and had kids and was renting, I'd first look at the student family housing or the area around Monte Vista Blvd. (Monte Vista runs NE from the corner of Girard and Central to the corner of Carlisle and Lomas).

Thanks lisdol...
I do have a three year old and am mainly looking into student family housing in hopes of being around and getting a chance to meet other single parents or families with children... I also didn't want to have to deal with what comes along with renting: application, employment verification, income, etc. (I'm an independent contractor working at my own will, when I choose/need)...
but anywho I'm excited about this new move!

Honestly, if it were me, I'd go for student family housing. You can always move later if you think you can find a better deal. You will be around other people in the same boat as you - you will probably make some good friends and neighbors that you can rely on.

A friend of mine stayed with her two kids in UNM family housing for her first semester, just because they do so much for you to get you on your feet, and then she found her own place next semester I think you should take the help you can get for the first few months until you get your feel for the city! Family housing seemed fine to me, great location.

You know what I also thought of, is if you will be here when your child is in Kindergarten, try finding a rental in the zone for Monte Vista Elementary. Its really popular, a great school, and its really hard to "yellow card" into if you don't live in the area. Its a very very short walk from campus to the school.

Thanks for the heads up on elementary... I'm actually still looking into some sort of day program, not really childcare... I'd prefer a designated head start... for financial reasons I may have to start with one of the cities child development centers... I've run into a lot of wait list, urgh... any advice on that?
