POLL: The future of Albuquerque
I've been reading various things about ABQ (expanding film/tv industry, West Mesa growth, Del Sol, lower crime than in the past, etc.)
Look past the current national recession and tell me what YOU think the future of ABQ is.... :-) Sometimes I think **oh god** Phoenix, and sometimes I think it could be a less-hip but still outdoorsy Portland. There's something about ABQ that makes me think it could really go beyond the Southwest sprawl model if steps are taken, now that the country is taking a breather.

Less-hip, really? Just a different kind of hip.
I suppose Peak Oil will decide how we build/grow/destroy/fall/live/die.

Rybert: Theres a huge nuclear reactor in the sky called the sun, which ABQ has gobs of. Theres part of your Peak Oil solution right there. Also, my city gets all its energy from one nuclear plant, so we can plug in our cars someday within 10 years and not worry about the greenhouse.

Preaching to the choir. I'll be taking delivery of a Chevy Volt in a few years (God willing).

I hope that it becomes a less-hip Portland. We can use the rain and we already have enough PBR swilling hipsters. ;-)
Actually, I predict a world-wide apocalypse caused by energy shortages, potable water shortages, environmental degradation famine, disease, sprawl, consolidation of wealth and the merging of Cable TV and the internet, so really, the question is moot.

I agree with Convict's apocalypse theory. Albuq. will then become either The Promised Land, or a deserted outpost from The Road Warrior. But I'm not sure which.

It is pretty close to what Phoenix was 25 to 30 years ago. Just don't wait 20 years for the light rail like we did. Do it now if feasible. Actually plan for the future, we were not too good at it. It costs a lot of money to catch up with what should have been seen earlier by the planners.
When I moved here in 1978 we were the 19th largest city. We now are about in the 5-7 range depending whose stats you look at. In the last 10 years we have really caught up.
