In the last round of base closures, Kirtland AFB did better than just surviving, it picked up a training squadron for the OV-22 Tilt rotor aircraft. They have a distinctive sound with their huge, slow moving multi blade props. I keep an eye out when I hear them up, and got this snapshot the other day as a column of three headed north toward Santa Fe:
I've seen those!! From my living room I have an un-obstructed view of the base and Four Hills and get to see training flights heading out over the Sandia's on a regular basis.
Never knew what they were so thanks for putting a name to them.
I used to see Ospreys on the OKC to ABQ drive all the time, somewhere around Amarillo. I wonder if that's where Kirtland is getting their aircraft from?
One of them flew low over our neighborhood one night a couple of summers ago and scared the bejeesus out of my friend's teenagers. I heard it and looked out my bedroom window to see it appear to be flying directly at my house - I ducked lol. Those suckers are noisy.
Shoot. I thought this was going to be about birds of prey. Seriously, I guess I didn't learn from the 'Wildcats!' thread.

Well since you admitted to it, I will also admit I first opened this thread thinking it was about a bird. I even said 'cool' aloud when reading the title.

Don't feel alone. I thought the same thing.
