anelizk, I didn't mean to sound harsh. I understand why your sister let someone use her phone - it's just a nice thing to do. I used to feel guilty whenever I'd tell someone giving me a sob story that I didn't have a cell phone/had no change/couldn't help etc., until I saw a "homeless" guy who usually bums money over in the NE Heights area way over on the far west side of town...beyond where buses go. Then saw him back over here in the NE area, begging again the next day. Hmnnnn.....

Although I must admit, there were two guys who'd play tag team begging on a particular corner in Tampa. It's almost like one was subbing for the other when they'd want a day off

No Yukon you weren't harsh...everybody gets a wake up call & lately I had really been wearing rose-colored glasses...not anymore! I also received a direct message from someone who frequents this site & told me some real horror stories that they've personally experienced living in ABQ.

My parents warned us & kept warning us. "Oh that place has a real crime problem...so & so's daughter was shot, so & so's son had this happen...etc...etc." I grew up in EP. EP is more spread out than ABQ, so crime usually is centered in certain areas like the lower valley & central EP & generally stays in those areas.

Wish we had considered being stationed here more carefully. It only took 6 mos. of living here for something to happen. The entire day my mother kept saying "see...we told you so!" It really ruined the entire weekend. It's a shame b/c ABQ is really an awesome place! The zoo, museums, art, culture, & we met Lesley Ann Warren & America Ferrera a month ago who were filming here! However, every place has a downside.

It seems lately a week doesn't go by where I read or witness a 'wake up' call such as this one. It's such a shame. Where I used to live, there wasn't nearly anything on the level of these amount of crimes, with regard to location. You knew the areas to avoid. What I mean by this is that there doesn't seem to be any immunity in this state, no matter where you go. I know Menaul and Wyoming, I spent a week in a hotel at this very intersection for training (actually Louisiana and Menaul) . It's not that terrible of an area, at least outwardly.

People wonder why this state has low safety rankings with regard to crime. I'd venture to say the amount of crimes such as these, which can lead to personal safety (imagine if during the car chase, an innocent pedestrian was hit, for instance) issues, are a big part of it.

I really don't enjoy reading stories such as these, because they tend to fortify my observations lately that maybe this isn't the place for us to live in, at least in the long term.

AlisonL: people make mistakes as I'm sure you have at least once in your life & sorry if my reply was short

Thanks for the feedback all, fortunately I don't own an I-phone, & rarely use my cell phone out in public.
The Penal system in the U.S. isn't the same as it is in Indonesia. Isn't Indonesia where an American was caned for vandalism to a car?

One thing that has been a good safe guard for my cell phone has been insurance. I paid about $5 extra a month for an insurance on my cell phone and had it replaced two times. Once when it was damaged accidently by me, and once when it was stolen during a street festival here in Chicago.

That would be Singapore, and the perpetrator, if I remember correctly, was Michael Fay.

I'll pass along the insurance idea to my sister...she's always using her cell phone. Like I said before, I don't use my cell often only during emergencies.

The caning incident occurred in Singapore. I'm well aware that the US Penal System is different from Indonesia. I was briefed at the embassy when we arrived & come from legal family. I got used to Indonesia's system which doesn't offer the same civil liberties & is quite draconian...but if you're smart & not on the wrong side of the law it usually isn't a problem. There are exceptions.

Our system is great...but tends to favor criminals more than the victims.
