I guess the thing I took away from that little anecdote is that APS does not have a standard policy in effect if a student is believed to be on campus with a loaded gun.

I was referencing the funding topic.

Desert Ridge Middle school is pretty much across the street on Barstow. Less than 1/4 mile away.

Is that a good middle school then too? We are thinking about this "set" of schools... or Bosque Academy if we can get her in.... and afford it

any idea of costs at BA?

I don't know although I am sure they can tell you if you call them, I would imagine they have staff there over the summer for their summer programs. I am guessing it would be close to Academy's cost...about 16k.

My daughter goes to Desert Ridge Middle and I believe it has the best test scores...along with La Cueva High in the ABQ district. greatshools.net is a good source of info on test scores. I know that's not the only way to judge a school, but it does give you some data to make comparisons. I know that over 50% of the 7th graders made the honor roll. (gpa over 3.5) The school seems to be run pretty well. And I was generally happy with all my kid's teachers this year. My one complaint is that the teachers seem to rely too much on workbooks, and give a lot of credit for simply turning homework in. They also give time in class to finish homework. Personally, I think it would be better if they had more writing assignments and projects. It's a whole lot easlier than the middle school my kid attended in CA.

Good luck to you

That exact same day, a Rio Grande student was caught with a real gun. School officials, accustomed to the situation, disarmed and detained the student without incident, and school proceeded as normal.

I think this is a case where maybe you don't want your kid going to the best school, merely because of how out-of-touch good schools can be.
Yet, give me a choice on where to go, I pick the "out of touch" school, where guns are not common place.. If being "in touch" now days means being exposed to guns so much so, that the staff are accustomed to handling the situation, it's time to move to a better neighborhood. High school kids should not have guns. period. Think of how many guns go undetected. I imagine they are sorta like cockroaches: for every 1 you see there are 10 you don't.

Exactly, so picking the "out of touch" school strictly because you think there aren't guns there, well.. that's out of touch.

Just for clarification, how many fatalities do you think there would have been at Columbine or Virginia Tech if every student was packing? More, or less?

Perhaps less at those incidents, but how many more isolated single shootings do you think there would be across the country if every student was packing? Do you honestly think that 15, 16, 17 years olds have the maturity and restraint to not pull a gun at every little whim? How many fights occur at each high school every day? How many times does a student get pissed at a teacher?

I bet it would be more than 13. A lot more.

Why do you think society charges a 16 year old that murders, different than a 30 year old? Its because at that age they don't have the necessary restraint, maturity, brain development, whatever, to judge their decisions correctly. You really think that there would be less school shootings? Perhaps massacres, not overall homicides though.

And yeah, I know guns exist at the good schools, but way less than the "bad" schools. I'm class of 03, went to eldorado, and never saw, heard, and even thought about anyone having a gun on campus. I had many friends go to sandia and la cueva as well. Guns just didn't occur to us, thats why la cueva acted the way they did. And I know thats not the story the few friends I know that went to Valley and West Meas.
