We lived in the Eisenhower MS area, and from everything we heard it was quite good. Not as pretty a bdlg as Desert Ridge, but a good, solid school.
The neighborhood association, EANA, is very active, and the kids who attend Eisenhower looked like a clean cut & happy bunch. We frequently used to see them walking home after school [we lived right around the corner]. Had we stayed in Albuq, I would have had zero reservations about sending our daughter there.

James Carter Middle School in the West Side is the Second best middle school in Albuquerque.. both including Desert Ridge are really nice looking schools. Well they are semi-new. Were looking at plans for another middle school there on the west side.. Edward Gonzales Elementary on Tower was the most over crowded at one point.. It was a school of portables.. No More

The teachers, the students based on reports of the school.
It came out on the Journal about a year ago..
The design of the school is amazing. Thats soon to be my kiddo's school
I have a couple of relatives that send their kids there. The teachers are always informing the parents.
The admin is always on top of their game.

I looked at the website and it does look nice and new but ( typical of APS ) the most recent test scores are for the 2006-2007 school year and the scores ( especially in math ) are frightening. I would worry that an average or above average child runs the risk of being overlooked as the class struggles to educate the almost 87 % that did not meet proficiency in math and the 63 % that did not meet the minimm in reading.
I know test scores aren't eveything, but they are something.
If you plan to send your son to Pius after J Carter, I sure hope he's able to get the education he needs to make the transition smoothly.

I was thinking about the low graduation rates in ABQ today and came to the conclusion that most of the blame has to go on the parents. If a kid puts all of his effort into graduating high school like he should, there's a 99.9% chance he's going to graduate. If a child isn't getting the values of education instilled into him by his parents, it's near impossible for a teacher to teach him. One of the duties of a teacher IS to motivate students, but it's unrealistic to expect them to light a fire under a student that has absolutely no aspirations for higher education. There has to be something there for them to work with, and that starts at home. With Albuquerque being a low-income city and a lot of parents being of the blue collar class, I'm guessing that a lot of kids do not go into school with either the desire to learn, or the belief that they can make something out of themselves through education because they haven't seen it with their own eyes yet.

I agree 100%, at the schools north of Paseo del Norte, the PTA meetings are jammed-packed standing room only. My nephew's wife who is a counselor for a SW school says, at best 40 or 50 parents, show up. Not the kids fault , a great deal of them have two strikes against them growing up.

I remember reading a year or so ago about the high schools in ABQ and how well they prepare their students for college. None passed (public schools) - not even La Cueva. Go for private school so your child will have a decent future.

Tell that to my Princeton friend from Highland High. Or my Notre Dame friend. Or my Air Force Academy friend.
