an area to be really meaningful. If the NE quadrant borders are approximately
Central Ave and I-25, it's what? About 40 square miles of suburban and commercial mix?
That's about 2/3 the size of the entire city of Washington, DC.

Percent in SE-21.6%
Percent in EM-0.0%
If you break down the quadrants, you'll see the NE is about the safest for murder even with these numbers, just because so many more people live there (it's a bit like comparing places like El Paso and Meadow Lake, NM; one has more murders but is also much safer).

NW Zipcodes w/ Population: 155,416

87114: 36642
87120: 50915
87121 (about half) 44886
87104 (about 2/3) 13125
87107 (about half) 35421
87102 (about 1/4) 25718
87105 (about 20%) 62629

NE Zipcodes w/ Population: 279,735

87113: 8318
87107 (about half): 35421
87109: 47014
87110: 44208
87111: 62868
87112: 50290
87123 (about half): 42146
87108 (about 1/3): 43396
87106 (about 1/4): 29434
87102 (about 1/4): 25718

SE Zipcodes w/ Population: 78,509

87123 (about half) 42146
87108 (about 2/3) 43396
87106 (about 3/4) 29434
87102 (about 1/4) 25718
87105 (negligible, at least until Mesa Del Sol starts building; or gets its own zip code)

SW Zipcodes w/ Population: 60,907

87105 (about 80%) 62629
87102 (about 1/4) 25718
87104 (about 1/3) 13125

Our sum totals based on this not-exact but good rule-of-thumb estimate:

NW 27.0% of the population, 23.5% of the murders
NE 48.7% of the population, 25.5% of the murders
SE 13.6% of the population, 21.6% of the murders
SW 10.6% of the population, 29.4% of the murders

Hence, NE is by far safer than NW. And SW, well.. since 87105 includes places like Pajarito and other populated areas outside the city limits but APD may not necessarily report murders in those areas.. the city's SW is well, still better than Detroit.

Back on topic, that Denny's murder is beneath contempt. Hopefully the judge will throw the book at the guilty, and not give the customary slap on the wrist.

I still say that you can't compare without looking at the actual crimes. For example, the Denny's waitress did not know the murderers ( as far as I know ) so this was a random crime. They could have easily killed a customer, a waitress, a busboy as they killed the cook.
Compare that to someone who shoots their spouse in their home. I would be in more danger at the Denny's since the killing was random and in almost no danger in a stranger's home since the target was someone specific.

Yeah, many people seem to think they are pretty unsightly...

Good point about the convenience of being able to leave the windows open. This would be esp. good for homes w/out AC, for night time cooling.

And in Albuq, having window bars would mean you could run your swamp [fan only] @ night to bring in that cool nighttime air, and not worry about a home intrusion.

Wow, so the SE and SW, which account for only 24.2% of the population, is the location of 51% of the city's murders? Pretty sad.

Also, I agree that the west side in general is a pretty safe area, I wouldn't say that Coors and I40 is particularly safe.

Lets take a look at an aerial view:

http://www.abqjournal.com/crime/homicide2008default.htm

2008 murders within 2 miles of Academy/Tramway 1
2008 murders within 2 miles of Coors/ I-40 : 5

Also, the weekly arrest map, non dui:
http://www.abqjournal.com/crime/crimemapweekdefault.htm

weekly arrests (7 days leading to today)
2 miles of Acad/Tram: 3
2 miles of coors/i40: 14

Just some interesting FACTUAL data for those of you interested...

When we were looking at properties before we moved here, I drew a line in the
sand at I-40 and, with a couple very specific exceptions such as Nob Hill, we
did not look at any properties south of that line. It's not that there aren't nice
area and good people south of that line, but rather that it's too easy for the
maleantes to "blend in" as they case you out and then make their exit.

40 years ago I lived in the South Valley off Isleta below Bridge and felt perfectly
safe (and I was). But that was a different time..

Yes, I know geography is not an airtight defense, but it sure helps.

FWIW, we ruled out the Four Hills area because it was too close to some shaky
neighborhoods and you had to transit them to get back and forth to too many
locations. Beautiful homes, though..

These figures, while probably accurate, are misleading.

I'd be willing to wager >5x as many people live in, and >5x as many people transit through the Coors/I-40 area than the Academy/Tramway area.

Transitioning in and out of Four Hills was exactly why we quickly began and ended the home search there last year, it just felt a little depressed and out of sync. (Plus more jet noise from the base)
