New City in New Mexico
Proposed new NM city has a name
Quote:
For years, there's been interest in incorporating part of Bernalillo County on Albuquerque's south flank and now a name has been chosen for the proposed community.
The area known as the south valley would be called Valle de Atrisco.
The city's population would be about 50,000.
|
Interesting...I guess the 50,000 would make it bigger then Roswell.

I saw that in the paper. The keys words are "For years, there's been interest in incorporating part of Bernalillo County". The article didn't really say what is happening to make this happen...

Especially when you have a name like "Valle de Atrisco", just name it Atrisco?

If they do it, then no more water, utilities, fire, police, schools, etc. from the City of Albuquerque. I doubt they have the revenue to do all of that on their own.

I think they need a different name....
Petroglyph National Monument - History of the Atrisco (U.S. National Park Service)
The Atrisco Land Grant
The Spanish land tenure or land grant system was a practice brought from Spain to establish economic development and settlement in New Mexico. Prominent individuals requested large parcels of land and their ownership was granted by a Spanish official or by the King of Spain. The Rio Grande and its surrounding valley were lush with native vegetation therefore Spanish settlers considered this land ideal for settlement, agricultural and grazing purposes. The Coronado expedition of 1540, led by Captain Hernando de Alvarado, marked the earliest sightings of what would later become known as the Valle de Atrisco in the present Albuquerque area.

If the city provides that now (and I think a fair bit is not provided by the city but by the county instead) there's no reason to expect the city wouldn't continue providing it on a similar fee-basis.
I'm a little disturbed by the nomenclature.. just like they are calling the new school "Atrisco Heritage Academy High School", as if Academy and High School are both necessary and four words are not enough.
"Valle de Atrisco" is similarly too long. That sounds like a subdivision, not a place where 50,000 people live. Imagine having to write that on your mailing address.
"Atrisco" would be fine, even if Atrisco itself is a neighborhood in Albuquerque.
My main concern is the areas of scrub on way west Central that this new city would encompass according to the maps I've seen. That doesn't belong to the south valley any more than it does to Albuquerque. Developers using the new city entity as a conduit to construct unrelated and unrestrained sprawl need to be kept in check.

Gee, do yah think that some developers would actually try to promote a new city
just to get unfettered, untaxed access to unbuilt areas? Gee, how cynical...

Why not just name it South Valley or just Atrisco
I think its a bad move on the behalf of the South Valley and if incorporated will have one of the highest crime rates and poverty.

It will be one of the worst cities in New Mexico.. but anyways, South valley isnt even a good name. They should break the city in two portions, up near the subdivsions, Weedville and in the Valley Loco Hills.. oh wait its already taken haha just messing I have family there..
Seriously a name like
- Farming Meadow
- Bloomington
(I like this one) -Blooming Crest
Valle de Atrisco..Not many people would think thats even in the US
DID YOU KNOW ....
Santa Fe's real city name is: La Villa Real de La Santa Fe de San Fransico de Asis.
