I've lived here since 1975 - still love it - except for all the traffic now - geez - we've become a big city - I miss the old days.

Edit to add: I still sometimes go to bed at night without checking the front door - I'm not in a gated community nor in those expensive areas (although it's getting that way) - I have great neighbors and we all look out for each other - pull the trash cans back up, etc. I also work at home. Graffiti is called into the police and then immediately cleared out.

I'm sorry, but everytime I read the title to this thread I chuckle a little.

I was born n raised in ABQ. We lived about ten houses south of Sandia HS. We never locked our door at night or when we left. I remember laughing once because we were going on vacation and my dad thought "I guess I should lock the door since we are going to be gone for a week." Our lock was this tiny little knob...not even a dead bolt.

That was in the 70's and early 80's.

Then a drunk strange guy was in our hallway at 2 am. My sister screamed and he stumbled out. We locked our doors after that. For about a week.

Our neighbor's RV was robbed and vandalized several times. We had a VCR stolen. My car window got busted out once and one time some kids broke our basketball rim and cut up the net. Other than that it was an awesome place to grow up.

We lived in a pretty great part of town, really.

My question is this: Did you check out ABQ first? Did you look at the crime index or anything?

My advice is this: Move to the NE heights. And if you see some bad looking people, stay away, but be bold. If they smell fear, they will attack.
