I think the best piece of advice I can give anybody is to only believe about 1/4 of what you read on these bulletin boards and do a few school visits in the flesh and make your own judgments. Most people mean well but the problem with the internet is that everyone is suddenly an expert.

It's not just Albuquerque. APS is inept enough, but education systems (run by liberals, sorry to say) suck bigtime at every level all across this country. My kids are grown but these days I would definately thoroughly check out a charter or private school before letting my kids go there. These days I say NO to public schools and virtually all colleges, universities and community colleges.

The only sane choice left in this country these days would be home schooling.

"The only sane choice left in this country these days would be home schooling"

That depends on the person doing the homeschooling. If your child's educational needs are not being met by any public/private school offering, it's a viable alternative.

If you're a wackjob trying to protect your kids from the "gay agenda" and exercizing your gawd given right to teach creationism and other philosophies to your kids, then homeschool away.

Plenty of communities have excellent schools and we still have some top notch universities in this country. Kind of hard to homeschool a law degree.

As a physician ,education is of utmost importance to me.I live in the far northeast heights and have my 3 children in public schools. When I moved here from California my main concern was whether my kids would get a good education and live in a safe neighborhood. The schools in the far northeast heights are excellent specifically the La Cueva and EL Dorado cluster. The US and News and World Report ranks high schools every year and once again in 2009 gave La Cueva High a silver star (ranked between 100-500) out of more than 22,000 schools.El Dorado a bronze star (rank between 500-1330).Eisenhower and Desert Ridge Middle School are excellent middle schools that feed La Cueva and El Dorado. The far northeast has many great and safe neighborhoods.I have always felt safe and never had any trouble running every other night (sometimes after 10PM )around the academy and back home a mile north.I am happy to have moved here 7 years ago and will never go back to the rat race that was California.I suggest you do what I did before moving here, personally check out the schools and neighborhoods do research on them and then make a decision.
