Relocation Nightmare, Help Needed
Hey everyone,
My wife and I have been planning to relocate to Albuquerque, but have run into some snags with finding a place to live.
Out current lease in Colorado ends on July 31st. My wife's new job doesn't start until August 17th. We were planning to move down on the 1st of August and getting a short term rental. We thought this would allow us to explore the different neighborhoods and give us time to decide on a lease or purchase of a new home.
Our 1st problem is that there doesn't seem to be a lot of complexes willing to do a month to month or 3 month lease. The second is that everyone I've called asks for employment verification before handing over keys. While this is reasonable, it's a problem to us because my wife's employer won't provide verification until she starts work on the 17th of August. I guess that's their policy.
Does anybody have any good ideas about how to get around this? At this point, I'm thinking our only option is to get an extended stay hotel until we can provide the verification necessary to get into an apartment. The problem is that those places would charge a lot.

You may want to consider signing the 6-month lease and breaking it if you have to. Most landlords will let you out of it if you leave their place intact and/or make it financially worth their while.
Plus, believe it or don't, it will probably take you 6 months to figure out what you want, exactly.
You may can also rent two places simultaneously a bit cheaper than renting motel space; weigh that accordingly.
As far as "do you have a job" type places, there are many places that don't care so much as long as you have deposit money. Maybe a search on craigslist, abq journal, daily lobo, alibi, etc. will yield locations that aren't as picky.

Sign a six month lease and pay for the entire six months in advance. I don't know any landlord who would not accept that kind of arrangement.

There are apartments in ABQ that can rent on a weekly or monthly basis. If there are vacancies of course. I know in Santa Fe they're called Warren Apts., and I believe here in ABQ they're the same thing. They take credit cards too. I guess if they ask for employment verification, just give them your current info.
Good luck.

Thank you all for the replies. Aside from this problem, I still look forward to moving to ABQ. I like the idea of paying for rent in advance to get past the VOE hurdle. Probably the most economic way to get down there. If that does not work, then I'll try the extended stay hotels.

Try Studio 6, Osuna at I-40. Clean, tidy, full size kitchen & bath, internet access, etc. Reasonable weekly rates and nice enough for a couple of weeks. Nicer part of town than where Warren Apts are. If you add up what you pay monthly for utilities, water, rent, cable and internet now and divide it by 4 (weekly rate), you might be surprised to find that you aren't paying that much more at some of the extended stay places.
Many of the landlords will work with you, even without having started the job yet, once they meet you face to face. Mine didn't even check with my employer (and I hadn't started work there yet). He knew my boss and I guess he figured I wouldn't lie about that after he said "oh yeah, I know so-and-so, how is he?"

I second Studio 6. We stayed there for 10 days and it wasn't that pricey.
We rented our house before my husband started his job here, but the rental company just made a call to verify his employment.
You might check into homes for sale and/or for rent. Those are usually month to month.
Good Luck.

And maybe your wife's employer will provide her with an "intent to hire" statement? I went through a similar job situation and although the HR department wasn't willing to write the letter of verification until after I started working, I explained the situation to my then soon-to-be immediate boss. Boss said, "sure I can write something, but its not worth the paper its written on since its not issued by HR department (in reference to it being a binding contract between me and them...Gotta love the government )." For housing purposes, it didn't matter. He wrote it, put his name as the person to verify employment to landlords. I used it and had no problem.
And I second the things a couple of folks already posted- Motel 6 over the Warren apts if you choose/need to go that route or just to a 6 mo lease.
Best wishes with your move

Do you have a letter or email that offers her the job? This has worked for us in the past. Would they be willing to verify over the telephone, even if not in writing?
