Thoueau is the middle of nowhere and would be a severe culture shock even by New Mexico standards. Albuquerque or Santa Fe would be more highly recommended.

Thoreau (pronounced Ther-oo by the locals) is indeed a small town, but I'm sure there are some very nice families there. I'd expect about half the kids there to be native american, half caucasian, or thereabouts.

I believe there is only a catholic school in the town. Nearby Gallup and Grants will have more shopping and entertainment options, as I'm sure your son will discover.

The area has significant problems with drunk drivers, though I'm not certain if it compares worse than Germany or not.

America is as much its small towns as it is its big cities. Might be a very educational experience.

Well, there is no doubt it would be an eye opener. My advice is based more on the range of experience one can have in New Mexico's cities.

I'm not trying to 'bash' or belittle Thoreau or New Mexico's rural areas. I just think that a teenager might feel pretty bored or isolated out there.

Can you say why you want to send him there?

What made you pick NM? Thoreau?

It might help others in giving you some direction.
