Default Perea’s Tijuana Bar & Restaurant in Corrales

So does anyone know about this place? Comments? Reviews? Thoughts?

I know when my wife and I would head to the Calico Cafe (the old one when it was still in Corrales before the fire), I would see this place, however, never stopped in or even really gave it much thought.

However, then I was reading (on one of my favorite websites besides the CD ABQ Forum!) this review: Gil’s Thrilling (And Filling) Blog » Perea’s Tijuana Bar & Restaurant - Corrales, New Mexico - and I was wondering why in the blue hades I had never dined at this place before!!! Multiple times!!! It sounds tremendous!

Beyond that, I have rarely (if ever) heard folks talk about it, or rarely see it referenced even in this forum (if I have seen it referenced, I have just accidentally overlooked it).

Thus, wondering what people's thoughts are. It is rare that I missed some tremendous ABQ area top NM restaurants - Mary & Titos is another one I have missed and should try. I am thinking on my next jaunt to ABQ I may need to stop in here!

Any thoughts?

I've been to the Tijuana Bar maybe 15 times in 10 years, I live about two or three miles from there. The food is pretty much New Mexican / Mexican / Spicy. And I enjoy it. A lot of history. I think they just have lunch, and they close early, I don't remember, I know I have gone many times only to see they are closed. Tamales and beer is what I usually get. Frito Pie is good. Sometimes I just get Chips and Salsa and Beer when I am trying to diet

Calico Cafe is doing great, they moved South on 4th Street in Los Ranchos, across from El Camino restaurant. We only have been there for breakfast, probably five times, always good food and service.

Gosh, EnjoyEP. No Little Red Hamburger Hut, no Mary & Tito's, and no Perea's Tijuana Bar??? Whazzamattawityou?

For the record, Perea's is great. One of a few small, quaint, family owned restaurants in Corrales. The chile is hot, the drinks are stiff, and the service is very friendly. Actually, a friend of mine is related to Mr. Perea. The place has been in the family for a looong time. In fact, the Perea's have been a staple of Corrales for probably a hundred years or more.

Just another restaurant you need to add when you get back here.

You have been to El Modelo, right? At least tell me that.

Yep, I was at their new location a few times. Actually, I kind of preferred things at their old jaunt, however, their new place certainly is much roomier. I did notice that they've changed their moniker from just the "Calico Cafe" to the "Calico Cafe & Cantina"....

Yeah, it is kind of nuts / pathetic. Certainly I can ramble off and off and off the legions of places I frequented (generally quite often), however, I did miss some good ones indeed as well. Which is again boggling...just how many outstanding indy restaurants a town of 500K (metro under 1-million) has...incredible.

Well, I will be heading to HH and Perea's for sure next time in town. M&T's might have to be the incentive to fight through the recession and get a good job back in ABQ asap so I can dine as a resident!!

Fear not, I have been one of the bigger proponents on this forum of El Modelo! I am a big fan, and have taken out from EM often. In fact, I almost was hired in a firm near EM (turned down a job offer), and had I been smelling that outdoors outside of my office everyday, it would've been a killer...calories-in-my-gullet, they would've been a flowin'!
