ABQ-Ride has recently undertaken a massive project to review each and every bus stop in its inventory (some 2700 stops city wide). With the pilot project under way on the #5 Montgomery Route, numerous stops have already been moved or taken out of service.
What are your opinions and concerns regarding this project...
Do you think considering the turn down in the economy that this project is maybe not in the best interest of of the people who ride the buses? Considering the City's budget shortfall, obviously cuts need to be made somewhere. In your opinion, is this a cut that the people of Albuquerque can live with?
Below is a link to the City's web page explaining ABQ-Ride's Bus Stop Evaluation Project.
Bus Stop Evaluation Program - City of Albuquerque (http://www.cabq.gov/transit/routes-and-schedules/abq-ride-to-consolidate-some-bus-stops - broken link)
The people at ABQ-Ride have explained thet their reasons for this project include:
Decrease bus stop density to increase efficiency. Other City Transit agencies have average densitys of 1000 to 1200 feet between stops. Albuquerque has an average of between 600 - 800 feet between stops.
Minimize the number of stops located before a controlled intersection, and maximize those located after the controlled intersection. This allows buses to not be caught at a red light after having to pick up or drop off passengers before the intersection.
reviewing safety issues at all stops
Better utilization of bus stop infrastructure (including benches, signs, shelters, trash cans etc.).
I have always supported this project, from the time it was first announced. I think that ABQ Ride's bus stops were way too close together, and they still are in some places. I think that they did a good job relocating the bus stops along the Montgomery corridor for the most part, but from what I have noticed, there have not been any changes made in the placement of the bus stops in at least about four months. Does anybody know what happened to this project, and if ABQ Ride plans to resume work on it anytime soon? I think that the work on this project should definitely continue until it is complete.

I've been riding the buses these past two months, after an absence of about a year, and definitely see changes in these two areas. Good moves, too.

I sent an email to the contact for the bus stop consolidation project. He sent back, "The bus stop evaluation program due to the primarily negative response from the public, has been terminated." I guess too many people didn't want to risk the chance that they might have to walk a few hundred extra yards during the day.

That's a shame. I really don't understand why it received such a negative response, just because the stops were being placed a little bit farther apart. I mean, I would much rather walk a little bit more to or from a bus stop than have to sit on a bus forever because it's stopping constantly. I was really hoping this project would move forward, since it often takes me a full hour to get from downtown to where I live using the #5 or #8 bus, especially during the rush hour. I was hoping that this program would cut that down by at least a few minutes. Oh well, I guess not.

The "just because the stops were being placed a little bit farther apart" is somebodies guess.
