I just saw this and had to post.

It doesn't matter if there is a large Japanese population in
the area if all you are doing is taking a course. You can't
major in Japanese or Chinese at UNM, so if that is what you
want, then elsewhere you need to go.

Any 101-202 level coursework is likely to be the same anywhere
in the US you go. If you want 'an experience' in addition to the
course, go to Japan or China where most of your classmates
can't speak English.

Even in San Francisco, if you go out into the Japantown
they are going to speak to you in English. The same in
Chinatown.

If you want total immersion, live in Japan or China for a while.

(Note that Taiwan is just as good for Mandarin.)

I think all of the above applies if you are studying Spanish.
It wouldn't be any more valuable to study it in Albuquerque
or Omaha if your classroom instructor is fluent.

I am minoring in Japanese, which you can do at UNM, clearly you didn't read my post. I already lived in Japan for 2 years and speak Japanese fluently. Here in CA, lots of Japanese speak to me in Japanese (because they are international students).

Let's see: Here is your entire posting history:

I come from Los Angeles and the recruiter at school today

which is not, because of budget cuts).

Also, I am studying Japanese. Is there a Japanese
community there? How big is it?

My major is Journalism or Communications mainly emphasizing
Public Relations. Japanese is a minor.

UNM said that I qualify for a scholarship that waives out of
state tuition, so I would be paying for only in-state tuition.
Even with out of state tuition cost of living makes it cheaper
to go to school in NM than ANY CA school, PERIOD.

Another problem is that right now the CSUs are limiting class
enrollment to 13 units, NO EXCEPTIONS.

Japanese community might be scarce, but they are leaving
CA in droves because of the cost of living. Mainly Japanese
Americans live here.
Nope. Nothing in there stating you were minoring in Japanese.
Also, there is nothing about being able to minor in Japanese
at UNM.

As a matter of fact, you only stated that you are studying
Japanese and not that you were fluent.

Perhaps a better course of study for you would be
English Communications since clearly you are
not yet able to communicate effectively
in that language.

If you were, you would also have noted that I was not even
responding to your post, but to the general assumption that
you needed a large, active community to be able to study
the language.
