I am interviewing for a position at Presbyterian Hospital. I would be relocating from the West coast. Would have an above average salary, but not a lot of cash on hand.

My wife and I are low key. We enjoy simple things and appreciate historical and cultural areas and events. Love mom and pop restaurants and dives.

In housing we like stucco style homes, do not like suburban living, but want a relatively safe neighborhood where you could walk to a shop or restaurant. And walk the streets without being harassed or worse.

I would need to live within 30 minutes, or so, of the hospital.

Any thoughts on this? Or any Do's and Dont's would be appreciated.

Thanks, Walt

Sam, somewhere in the Central or N. Valley may fit the bill. I'm thinking possibly around Montaño and 4th? I believe that area would fit the bill in terms of an older, non-suburban area with culture, mom & pop places, and also some limited walkablility.

I am thinking maybe off of Indian School somewhere. Here you will find a lot of older neighborhoods with some charm...and many areas within walking distance of a store. Also, perhaps looking in some areas off of Montgomery over by El Dorado high school (Heights, but not really a sububran feel. I think you will need to come and visit to see what feels right to you.

What about West of University between Lomas & Copper. It's close to the hospital, older beautiful homes, lots of shade trees. I see people out walking their dogs at, jogging even at dark. I love driving through that beautiful neighborhood but never lived there so I don't really know the crime stats.

It also depends on how much you want to spend on rent or if you are purchasing how much you want to spend on purchasing a house.

I think most of the responders here have a missed an important point: which location of Presbyterian? With branches throughout the state, this has an important bearing on where to recommend.

Thanks to everyone who has posted.

I have accepted a position at Presb. Hosp, downtown ( ? ) on Central.

I spent a few days last week looking around town. But not enough to get everywhere. I did like the area ( though not what I described as preferred ) north of Paseo del Norte east of Tram road. Most I think are more than I can afford though.

I could go up to around 350K. But would like to stay around 250K so I might could retire someday.

Ridgecrest... you'll probably meet a lot of other medical professionals in the neighborhood.

Just looked, there are properties there in your price range. Condo's/Townhomes from $185k+ and Single Family Homes from low $300's

Some of the nicest, most walkable, charming neighborhoods in ABQ are within a 20 minute walking radius of Presbyterian. I would look into ridgecrest as mentioned, along with Silver Hill (directly adjacent to Presby), or the area just west of UNM (aka "Pill hill" for the number of doctors, etc in the area). Really, there's no reason to look beyond the general downtown/unm area for what you are describing. Plenty of nice areas with beautiful, historic adobe-style homes. Also, although these neighborhoods are near the university, student-dominated neighborhoods don't really exist in ABQ, so noise won't be an issue. You could very easily walk or bike to work as well, which (trust me) greatly improves your quality of life. If you are already considering this, forgive my preachiness, but there really is zero reason to drive 30 mins to work in ABQ if you have a job set before moving here.
