It begs the question.... so, why did the tarantula cross the street?

Just wondering since I'm scared to death of them...Do they attack humans or do they have to be provoked? I would jump 10 feet if I saw one of them!!

LLIABQ, there is no reason to be afraid of them. The native southwestern tarantulas can bite, but it is akin to a bee sting. They have no venom in them that is dangerous to humans, unless you have an allergic reaction. Then again, one could die ofanaphylactic shock from peanuts.

You'd have more of a chance of being attacked by a humming bird than a tarantula. I used to have one that I picked up in Rio Rancho, though I let him go back into the wild where he belonged. Now, if you saw one that is South American, well then that's a WHOLE different story.

When I was living in Embudo in the 70's we saw a migration of tarantulas. They were HUGE. It was pretty far-out trippy even for the 70's LOL!

WWIW, I've heard that the ballon fiesta site experienced a mass "migration" one evening. I was told that the area was covered with the little critters.
