Future High Rises?
I was wondering if Albuquerque has any plans in the near future or future in general, to build any more high rises downtown?? Albuquerque's Sky line looks pretty good in my opinion, so I was just curious if they plan on expanding. Thanks

jayely1: there is only one tower currently proposed. It would be a convention hotel attached to the convention center and possibly a new arena. There was a residential tower downtown as well as an office tower in the north I-25 area proposed but these were prior to the economic downturn.

If the downtown / UNM / Nob Hill areas continue to develop into major economic
centers, then sooner or later there will be an incentive to build up rather than out,
but I think a mid-rise (10-15 story) or two would be far more likely than true high-rises.

Nothing goes higher than the city/county building - that's been a long running unsaid rule.

I dont see why they built that new HP building in Rio Rancho so spread out, that thing is huge and takes up alot of land, if that is going to be the new city center they could have started off on the right foot and built up.
Why do they do this?

That was part of the original city plans.
Rio Rancho never really had a Downtown unless you consider Hwy 528 and Southern Blvd a downtown.
If "that thing is huge and takes up alot of land", why would you try to cram it in a heavily populated area?
Have you been to the new High School out in the area, or City Hall? Or Event center? That area is what is being expanded on....

What happens in that new building? Manufacturing? Phone bank?
If it's manufacturing, then a large spread-out facility makes sense.
I'm sure the land was being given away, another factor to consider.

I thought of this topic because of you Bradly haha, I searched for high rises and saw all your posts on the threads about "most boring high rises" and such.
Hope they will have some soon!

Mayors don't often have much say on halting or pushing for skyscrapers. Indirectly, perhaps, if they advocate for more dense development, but rarely do mayors get involved in pushing for a highrise. I may have many qualms with the new mayor, but I don't think I'm too worried about him blocking development downtown - the redevelopment efforts will go forward.
Consider Bradly, just how many skyscrapers were built in ABQ during the Chavez years...
I would like to see more development in the urban core - more density = more vibrancy, not to mention the environmental, health, and social benefits, but it doesn't have to be in the form of high-rises.
