Thanks also for the info on Sandia HS!! I'll keep it in mind.

Hey Trivia... it looks like we have kids the smae age...we might be neighbors some day!! (keepinf my fingers crossed...hubby has to get a transfer soon...the DC area is wearing on him!!)
High School tennis is a pretty big sport here in Albuquerque, as is soccer. We have different leagues. AYSO - Albuquerque Youth Soccer Organization and then a more heavily comp league is called Duke City Soccer. AYSO is not nearly as competitive as Duke City. Duke City requires try-outs, 2-a-days, and traveling. AYSO tends to have less experienced players.
(i played on both AYSO and Duke City)

As Vpuccetti has stated, youth soccer is quite popular in ABQ. But while youth tennis also has a decent presence in the city, it doesn't come close to the level of participation as soccer.

5stones, it sounds like your middle daughter would be a good fit in AYSO. Here is their website: http://ayso104.org
Their sign-ups are usually in March for play in the following Fall & Spring.

I believe most, if not all, local public high schools field a tennis squad. Traditionally, the strongest programs have been at Sandia, Eldorado & La Cueva, while Cibola & Rio Rancho have had good recent showings as well. If you're interested in a tennis club, check out the Tennis Club of Albuquerque (http://www.tca-tennis.net). Its been around forever, and I believe they are affiliated with USTA.

One more plug I'll throw out for Sandia (even though no one has asked ): SHS is the only school in the NE Heights that has its own on-campus swimmming/diving facility, if you have kids that are interested in aquatic events.

Triviaologist, glad to be of help! Hope things work out for you and your family. If you do investigate the Sandia area for homes, I'd recommend checking the areas immediately north of the HS, all the way to Academy Blvd. Some VERY nice homes in established neighborhoods in that general area.

Chap

Thanks for the input Vpuccetti & Chap,
you make a good case to check out other areas.... so what is the zip code to look up housing in the Sandia HS school area? I usually look on realtor dot com to get an idea of price etc...
(my youngest is my swimmer....so food for thought on having a pool at theschool)

Thanks again...for the quick replies and input.

Zip is 87110

The Academy, a private highschool, has their own swim team as well. But its an INSANELY expensive school that doesn't really teach a lot.

Eldorado zip is 87111 in case you want to search there. And there are competitive swimming teams as well. Del Norte Sports and Wellness, a very nice and expensive gym located close to La Cueva and Highpoint Sports and Wellness by Eldorado, is where they do practices. A few of my friends from La Cueva were on it and they were pretty good.

And as far as soccer, chap gave you the link for AYSO, here is Duke City http://www.dukecity.org/

While Sandia is located in the 87110 zip code, the district also includes good chunks of 87109, 87111 and 87112. If you focus your search on 87109, 87110, and 87111 and note the HS district, you should be able to get a decent impression of homes in the area.

You may happen to come across a "Mossman" home (a home constructed by Fred Mossman, a builder known for the legendary quality of his houses) in this area as well. Here's a little info clipped from the web about Mossman homes around Sandia:

"Mossman neighborhoods, near Sandia High School, remain in high demand due to the quality constrcution and desireable locations. Built 30 to 50 years ago, Mossman homes often boast such features as hardwood floors and tongue-and-groove raised ceilings, as well as generous lot sizes, lush, mature landscaping, and convenient, more central locations. Smaller Mossman homes may be under 1500 square feet, and priced from the low $100,000's, while many of the large and elegant models bring well up into the $200,000's."

Hope you find what you're looking for!

Chap

Glad to be of help! Hopefully your move went smoothly and your son is well into his YAFL season! What part of town did you finally decide to settle down in, if you don't mind me asking?

We arrived too late for him to get into football, unfortunately. They were starting football in Massachusetts the week we left, but it had already started here and they wouldn't allow us to sign him up even though we had just arrived because we weren't here for the cut off date. *Sigh* One very disappointed son -- but there's always next year!

We are living in NE at the moment, and are home shopping in the La Cueva HS areas.

Sorry about the YAFL thing...you are right, there is always next year. You may want to try to call one of the coaches and see if he can't find a way to get your son on the team. I hope that you enjoy our wonderful city, and that the culture shock was a positive experience and not a rueful negative one!
