The one thing we would have done differently is to have kept more closely in touch with the teachers -- and we were already fairly involved, but even more involved would have been better. Our son went to Highland, which was extremely diverse, but it was a good learning environment for him. It helps if your children are focused as well as having great lines of communication open between them, parents, and the school. Plus, I think it helps a whole lot if the teachers know that you are very involved with the school. It might not be a bad idea to start hanging out with the PTA even before your kid is in the school just so you can get plugged into the local network and meet some of the staff and parents, get an idea of different teachers' styles, and learn what the local resources are.
