Padilla's. One of the best in the entire state.

I love Mannie's for breakfast. Not the best coffee, but great Pedro's corned beef hash....real corned beef with green chile. Yummy.

Also, Barelas. They do great green chile as well.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that looks forward to lunch at a particular restaurant like that! Cracks me up

I'm an ABQ fanboy in real life too, my coworkers don't understand my passion. Especially not my passion for the Frontier.

El Patio for the real deal. Technically neither in Nob Hill nor Downtown but you can't get from one to the other without passing a couple hundred yards from El Patio. Plus it is on a nice street and if the weather is nice, their outdoor seating is perfectly quaint.

The Frontier is good, but more of a diner, not a restaurant.

Sadies is my favourite but I didn't recommend it since it is not downtown/nob hill.

The best places will not be the most obvious ones. In the 15 months that we've
been here, we've found or been shown a number of smaller, family run places that
have the real deal.

A couple quick suggestions..

Mary and Titos on 4th NW at Menaul
Ruben's Grill on Candelaria NW just east of Eubank
Barela's Coffee House on 4th SW just above Bridge
Cecelia's Cafe on 6th SW just below Central
(I'm ambivalent about Cecelia's, but a lot of people love it)
Sophia's on northern 4th NW between Montano and Osuna

Notice that none of these are near the University or Nob Hill? The best "New Mexican"
food is aimed at the local Hispanics, not the upscale gringos or students who'll
gulp down just about anything.
