In 2001 New Mexico was the #1 most dangerous state in the country, but now we are just in the top 10,but I dont really think its all that bad,but there are the few bad spots. In 2004 Clovis had 10 murders in a city of only 32,000 people, now thats not good.

I used to live in Tijeras Canyon, east of Albuquerque. Albuquerque is spread out and has some very nice areas and some not so nice areas, as do most towns. Santa Fe is a popular place to visit. It has many cultures there and a lot of history. In Alb. there is a section called Old Town which is very artsy and it is near the University. There are very diverse terrains there. On the west side of the Sandia Mountains it is high desert. On the east side there are forests and a beautiful view of the city from Sandia Crest. There are lots of things to do... golf courses, lots of nice restaurants, and the Balloon Fiesta in October. It is one of the best places to go Hot Air Ballooning. The state of New Mexico is one of America's best kept secrets as far as I am concerned. It is truly The Land Of Enchanment... I don't know about housing prices there now since I have been gone for a few years. Try it, you'll like it....Traveler

no. Northern New Mexico is a lot like that b/c of the Indian Resevations, a lot of those are the "ghetto." New Mexico is a really nice place to live, just choose wisely.

I love deserts but Hate Albuquerque.
Albuquerque is a ghetto. High crime rate (thats in most of new mexico though). A lot of poverty. Very little culture and art (unless you like indian stones and mexican rugs). Cold weather. Yes, high tempratures may seem warm in the winter if you look at the charts but you should look at the medians, they are close to the lows. Very bad healthcare... hospitals are closing because of a lot of people some of which are illegal immigrants cant pay their bills here. A lot of drunk drivers (bad enforcement of the law, they let repeating offenders get away with it) Hate the architecture, washy dirty brown color on all the buildings.... chicken fences in many neighbourhoods with scrap metal collection as the dominant hobby. No mentionable night life... I am moving out as soon as I can! The local call it "the land of entrapment" a pun on "enchantment", the real motto. |

I like Albuquerque. The places you guys seem to describe is the valley or the south valley. The northwest & northeast are pretty nice areas. I don't really see racism. And there is a lot of art! You guys just see the negatives. I really like Albuquerque & enjoy it.

I left MN to live in ABQ for 11 years and it really wasn't as bad as everyone keeps saying. The schools my son attended in the NE heights were not very nice but the parents were VERY involved! The weather is practically unbeatable. It snows. The snow melts quickly. If you want to play in the snow some more you just drive up in the mts. or go golf in the middle of January. The southwest decor is super cool. The red and green chile are awesome. The crime is bad and there are bad drivers in every state... you should see Minneapolis!!! If you like to bike, hike, and ski you will love it. The balloon fiesta is neat too! If you are military you will get all kinds of breaks...tabs,property taxes, access to the base. Good Luck!
