Sorry for digging up an old post, but I'm new to the board and just have to put my 2 cents worth.
I personally have no problem with New Mexico itself. Being that I'm a person who prefers greener landscape, wetter climates, and cooler temperatures throughout the year, I still have no problem with the state. As for Albuquerque, I don't think it's a bad place. There's plenty about it to love. Of course, since I'm not a native New Mexican, I'm not as passionate about the place as some others. Albuquerque will never be a "big city" to me, but that doesn't mean I completely hate it. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. Lived there until I moved to ABQ at age 24. For me, there is no traffic you can show me in New Mexico, Phoenix, Dallas, Ft. Worth, or Denver that comes close to what we have out in LA. When I heard the people of Dallas talking about the traffic I was like, "What traffic?" The only place that I've been to that can kind of come close is Las Vegas Blvd. on a Friday night when all the young kids and tourists are there. The weather is fine. When it's cold it's great. When it's hot, it's hot. When it's in between, it's in between. What I can't stand is the wind. Since I live in an area of the city that is more open, the wind can really pick up here. And since the area behind my house is desert that was dug up to be used for development, there's a lot of lose sand that always finds a way of getting through my windows and door cracks. That's life. The biggest complain I have about ABQ is the people. I don't get why most people of Albuquerque have a problem with Santa Fe. According to most people born and raised in ABQ, the people of Santa Fe drive with their heads up their rear ends. This is true for a lot of drivers in ABQ, so I don't know what they're talking about. They also say the traffic in Santa Fe is bad. Again, what traffic? People in Santa Fe are pretentious - I don't see it, and that's not because I'm pretentious just because I'm from LA. Everything in Santa Fe is expensive - While gas does cost more in Santa Fe than it does in ABQ, I don't see the difference in anything else. Maybe because I'm from LA where stuff really is expensive. Anyway, I don't get why people with ABQ have this feud with Santa Fe. I also don't get why New Mexicans have a feud with Texas, and are not too crazy about Californians either. It's stupid. They refer to Texans as stupid and dislike them simply because they're Texans. Way to be prejudice! I've heard all the reasons, and all I can say is these people need to get over it and themselves. Period. To me, there is a thin line between disliking a person because of what state they're from, and disliking a person because of what race they are, and I can see these people who dislike Texans and Californians crossing that thin line quite often. For us big city folk living in ABQ, there is not much night life. Liquor is a big business here. I'll leave it at that. I haven't been to Tucson in a long time, but I know the climate. Southern Arizona would be so much nicer if it wasn't so darned hot. I myself prefer Flagstaff, and surrounding areas. If you love baking heat, Tucson, Phoenix and all those suburbs are great. Wages here are low, but they just might be on par with other states. I work in education. We all know that you won't get big $$$$ in education unless you have a Masters or Ph. D. In New Mexico, even with a Masters it will still take you a few years before you see a hefty pay raise, something that is not so true of other states. Still I couldn't see myself doing anything else, nor would I want to either. ABQ is OK. It's what you make of it, as with any other place. The climate is nice for a desert, and it's not so huge that you can't drive through the city on the freeway in 30 mins or so. I'm living a nice quiet life here while my husband and I finish our degrees. We've had some great opportunities out here that we're grateful for. I know I'll miss the place when I go. |

I don't know... Texans and Californians are bad people (and people who are from, will be from, or currently live in, Santa Fe).
Albuquerque will never be like any other American city... ever. That's how I like it, which is handy, because that is how it will remain. |

Too bad you had a bad exerience here DurangoGuy. My experience has been completely contrary---but not denying that crime is on the upswing.
At least get your facts right, ABQ is not 65% hispanic, it's in the 40 % range. And so what does that have to do with anything? Apparently you are saying that' s what makes it a ****hole. Not nice, not right. |

And get your facts straight too. Albuquerque isnt even on the top 50 for worst DUI. Albuquerque has a 41% hispanic population. And i have lived here all my life and i havent seen so much trash like you mention and about the running lights deal? <Mod cut: orphaned; replying to now-deleted material> Last edited by EnjoyEP; 07-15-2008 at 07:25 AM. |

though I agree with the poster you quoted, but he/she was unprofessional. The crime rate here is higher per capita than most places, DUI is high here in abq we are considered top 5 awhile ago, but we are cleaning it up thanks to bill R. of course, as for the hispanic population it is high here vs others, but there is nothing wrong, but whats funny is that its reverse discrimination here yes its kinda weird (my opinion). Let me give you an example of reverse yes im a white person one day I saw a crime witnessed it. It was a shooting when cops got there there was about 6 hispanics guys who were kept there and then lonely me the white person. One hispanic was carryinga gun the cop noticed this and asked him for permit and what not so he did let him go and let the other 6 hispanics go also, but he kept me there for 6 hours of interrogation, long story short I had to go in to be questioned even though im the guy who reported it Though ABQ is changing and im glad for it the crime rate is still high and the repeat offenders are geting away thanks to corrupt judges. seriously a fine example is the person who shot the little asian lady at that restaruent and he had a past crime rate and he was let go every single time from his past crimes. Our education system is ranked pretty poor also you have to admit to that one also even cops I talk to admit that one not just one cop, but multiple cops who have to go to school to report a stabbing or whatever....I believe we were ranked dead last one time in education.Even though what I said above sounds like I hate abq I dont I enjoy it here the museums are top notch, zoos, etc.... I understand and i know more less.. but your input about Bill Richardson is what really caught my attention, because he has done nothing at all! the whole dwi going down isnt because of him at all what so ever, and all he has foucused on is the whole "presidential campaign" thing which gets me upset, he has left new mexico in the dark for to long and his approval ratings arent so high.. i wish we had a governor who put education before tv productions and presidential campaigns. If he cant put up with new mexico's problems what makes people think he can put up with our country's problems. |
