Used hand-held radios sold to entities in Mexico are interfering with communications over hand-held radios in Carrizozo, Lincoln County Emergency Services Director Travis Atwell reported Tuesday.
Local fire departments have stopped using the state fire frequency because they're competing with a Juarez taxi service, he said.
"They are hearing the traffic, but it is starting to get spotty," he told county commissioners at their monthly meeting. "The issue is interference coming from Juarez, Mexico. It's happening throughout the state.
What do we do with our old radios? We put them up for auction. And where do they go? Mexico. If we cannot pull the frequencies and Mexico gets hold of them, they use the frequencies. Right now they're on the state fire and state police car-to-car (frequencies) and are killing the whole southern part of the state."
