I was wondering, does anyone happen to know of what is the current status of the proposed Target store at Coronado Center?
Target has been planning a store on where the old Macy's was located since 2007, but as of August 2009, no constrcution has taken place. Target wants to demolish the old two-level Macy's store and replace it with a single-level store. Perhaps the financial condition of Coronado Center's owners (General Growth Properties) may have something to do with the delay of construction.
Two story Target stores do exist. I've recently seen a very nice two story Target in Gaithersburg MD. They had a very interesting modified escalator that allowed shopping carts to easily go up and down between the floors.
Bradly - Truly no need to "freakin" out. We heard you before. I simply said I saw a 2 story Target. Its a pretty obvious extrapolation that they could build a 3 story one if they wanted. However, I do know of stores that took over closed 3+ story stores in Texas malls, and simply only used 2 of them. Let's see what happens...
If GGP fails - what will become of Coronado Center?
As we all know, General Growth Properties (GGP), the owner of Coronado Center, is operating under Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.
So, if GGP fails, what do you think will become of Coronado Center?
IMO Coronado Center is too important for Albuquerque residents to fail. Perhaps it may be acquired by Simon Property Group (owners of Cottonwood Mall) or someone else. It would be a nightmare if Cottonwood Mall was the only indoor mall remaining in Albuquerque.
"IMO Coronado Center is too important for Albuquerque residents to fail. "
Why?
"It would be a nightmare if Cottonwood Mall was the only indoor mall remaining in Albuquerque."
Why?
Because Albuquerque is too big to have only one indoor mall. Cottonwood Mall would be overcrowded if it were the only remaining indoor mall in Albuquerque.
But outdoor malls are on their way out and anything planned for the future should be Uptown-styled outdoor shopping centers....there is plenty of retail in Albuquerque on both sides of the river. If Coronado can hold out until Winrock is redeveloped and Uptown is full, I say implode it.

If Coronado Mall "fails", what do you expect will happen? Do you expect all the stores
to close? What's the importance of an "indoor" mall, anyway? What makes an "indoor"
mall so desirable?
The new Uptown Center looks to be a roaring success and it's a total rejection
of the enclosed mall concept. And as far as that goes, the entire Cottonmouth
Mall complex is as much a series of clusters of semi-stand-alone stores as an
"indoor" mall.
Home Depot, Walmart, Best Buy, Kohls, Borders, Sam's Club, etc., etc. etc. are
all stand-alone or near-stand-alone stores surround the periphery of the entire
complex and that was not an accident. Proximity and access of similarly targeted
stores is vital to a retail enclave, but forcing them under one roof has seldom
been an advantage to modern retailers except in locations where bad weather
is a factor.
