Paseo Del Volcan does extend south of Rio Rancho to Albuquerque, though not continuously, and the Albuquerque side of things is seriously messed up.
The first realization is that the name comes from the extinct volcanoes on Albuquerque's west side. A N/S road in Albuquerque lines up with RR's Paseo Del Volcan and hugs the west edge of these volcanoes, running north from I-40. The Albuquerque portion _used_ to be called Paseo Del Volcan.
Albuquerque city planners wanted to line up a N/S artery with Rio Rancho's Paseo Del Volcan, which wasn't realistically going to happen with the existing Paseo Del Volcan. It was big enough, and it lined up, but _somebody_ wanted to develop the scrubland at Quail Ranch further west. RR now has it in the plans to plumb their end of PDV too far west.
So Albuquerque city planners did the most boneheaded thing imaginable. They renamed Paseo Del Volcan to "Atrisco Vista Blvd", itself a pretty confusing name, as "Atrisco Dr", a road of major historical significance, runs parallel a few miles east. It's a common enough problem in older metro areas to have multiple confusingly named streets running parallel to each other (Peachtree in Atlanta, Florissant in St. Louis), but this was easily avoidable.
Now they're putting through a new road about a mile west of the old Paseo Del Volcan and calling it Paseo Del Volcan, even though the volcanoes haven't moved and aren't on the new road, and now even RR's Paseo Del Volcan never passes any volcanoes. It's like renaming Tramway "County Highway 14" and renaming Eubank "Tramway".
You can still find a little stub of PDV in Albuquerque two blocks east of Atrisco Vista and Central (141st street SW).

Berry Administration's brochure.
I have no problem with a buildout west of Double Eagle II airport if there's market demand, but the reappropriation of a name with meaning, Realtor-style*, is something I wish more people would stand up to. Hopefully a new batch of MCRP's can reattach Paseo Del Volcan in Sandoval County to "Atrisco Vista" in Bernalillo county and call the new boondoggle "Estrella Blvd." or similar.
*Realtors are notorious for "stretching" famous neighborhoods in order to get higher prices for their properties. For instance, Nob Hill in Albuquerque now extends to and beyond Lomas and San Mateo, which is completely ridiculous.
