I drink a lot of red wine (mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Chianti) for the purpose of reaping its health benefits. Is there any difference between cheap and expensive red wines in this regard? Are more expensive wines more health-promoting?

No - price does not determine the quality of wine. Wineries that have a longer history or more exclusive market can charge more for their label, but the price is not an indicator of the "quality" of wine produced.

However - different varieties of grapes do have different levels of anti-oxidants (resveratrols). Supposedly, grapes varieties grown in cooler and more humid climates have higher levels of this compound than those grown in warmer, dryer climates.

While Muscadine has the highest concentration level - Pinot Noir is touted as the most main stream grape having the highest levels, especially the pinot from cooler regions like Burgundy, Oregon and Washington, and New Zealand.

I couldn't find any scientific references stating which grapes had the highest, but a ton of blogs and health journals state that pinot is probably the best "healthy wine"

I would suggest that there is a pretty good (if not perfect) correlation between wine quality and price - consumers aren't idiots and its a pretty dynamic market.

But thats about taste, not health.

You can go for the varietals suggested by gohokies - but be warned, decent Pinot is more expensive than a Cab or Chianti of equivalent quality. In general as long as its red its okay (and yes, red grape juice has the same benefits)

warning... some of the cheaper wines do add dextrose to make the wine sweeter. That's one bad hangover.

Yeaaa...uuuummmm...that's why I drink a lot of wine too.

Anyway, I can find a good wine for about $5 per bottle, and all I drink is Cabernet Sauvignon.

I'm cheap (drinking mostly box Cab wines for antioxidants) but anyone try Corbett Canyon's 3L Pinot Noir? I'm thinking for about $8/box it is a good wine for a great price. Anyone?

It's not just the resveratrol as, believe it or not, alcohol itself has some benefits for your heart & circulatory system in moderation.

The French make a big deal out of their heart healthy diet because of their daily wine intake ... and they mostly drink Languedoc wines as their daily table wines, which are the cheapest of the cheap wines they produce. These wines are inferior to the well-known export quality wines from other regions of France, and they don't export these in any quantity compared to what is produced and consumed in France ... it's not because they're hoarding it for themselves. But they apparently get the health benefits from these wines .....
