Jameson is decent and cheap. Mixed with ginger ale, it's pretty decent.

It is an Irish whiskey. It is sacreilgious to even consider mixing it with anything else.

Neither is close to Poitin - like another poster pointed out. Knockeen hills is a brand in Ireland and I don't know if you can get it stateside. Never really looked for it.
pocheen is basically white lightning, to be drunk out of a glass jar in somebody's backyard...

No, it's the other way around. Bushmills is regarded as the Protestant whiskey because it's from Northern Ireland. Some Irish bartenders in New York get angry and refuse to serve Bushmills. Irish-American pubs are more political than the ones in Ireland.

If I'm having blended whiskey, I prefer Irish (and Jameson in particular) because it's a little smoother. If I'm having single-malt I prefer a really peaty scotch, like Laphroaig. I think blended Irish is better than blended scotch.

Between the 2, definitely Bushmills and not because I'm Protestant, its because I think its the better whiskey, its just seems more complex than Jameson's, which is too sweet for my tastes. Although, I recommend the Black Bush over the standard Bushmills.

It's kind of weird that Ireland has only five major distilleries and Scotland (right across the water) has like 200. I bet that will change though.

Prohibition killed a lot of Irish distilleries as Irish whiskey was a huge export back in the day. Scotch didn't catch on to till later. I think if Irish brands can do something to cater more to the connoisseur and at reasonable price, they may be able to make a comeback.
