Actually, that's a Salty Dog. Greyhound is the same, without the salt rim
Whoops!! My bad! I knew that, of course, I drink them! When I read this just now, I'm like "What? Weren't we talking about a salty dog?" I had to go back and read the thread!
almost a scientific fact -- once you triple distill the vodka (i.e. most premium segment), you wont be able to tell the difference unless you have superhuman abilities.
everything else is pure marketing and it all boils down to what bottle do you think is prettier. you may be able to taste the difference if you are comparing the different types of vodka (rye vs potato vs corn), but everything else is all pure scam in the grand scheme of things.
while we were in college, we would just buy bottom shelf vodka, run it through Brita charcoal filter a few times -- and you can't tell the difference between the final product and grey goose. trust me on this one .
PS: Beluga over Gray Goose any day. I am guilty of it myself.

Fact 2, once you add mixer, even Superman can't tell.
Fact 3, after the first one, even Superman can't tell.
when you make a vodka-based mix drink, the quality of vodka is mostly irrelevant (unless of course you are pouring something obviously terrible from the bottom shelf that wasn't filtered enough times). Gray Goose or Smirnoff - doesn't matter, as your taste buds will be too busy absorbing all the other fruity things...
I also agree on the "after the first one".
again, you probably still can taste the difference in subtle aftertaste between the kinds of vodka (grain vs potato vs corn) if you really have excellent taste buds, but you will never be able to distinguish between vodkas from the same source, especially if you have it ice-cold... its all marketing after a certain point. from that perspective, it is absolutely rediculous to cough out the $$$ for the uber special limited edition vodkas even if it claims to come straight from heaven. you. wont. tell. the. difference. it is all placebo effect and pure marketing scam.
and an excellent article BTW. while I absolutely refuse to agree that the Shmirnoff is the best tasting vodka out there, I can definitely agree that Wyborowa is nectar of gods. I drank with some Polish businessmen in Warsaw, they highly recommended Wyborowa, and I was absolutely blown away how smooth and delicious it was.
We had a Vodka tasting here at the house a few months back, Tito's and Ketel One came in tied for first, while heavyweights like Grey Goose and Belvedere were bringing up the rear.
