3 is nothing and not anywhere close to alcoholic. In college I was drinking 11 a day during the week and 15 Friday and Saturday night. I didn't think this was much since my roommate was drinking 15-20 during the week and 25-30 on the weekend. Of course, he later went to AA. I read some kind of study that 1 or 2 drinks a day is supposed to be healthy, at 3 the benefits decrease quite a bit and at 4 they are nonexistant. I would say alcoholic range would be getting drunk 5-6 days a week. Affecting work and family is hard to judge because people can hide their alcoholism. I have family members that drink 5-6 a day and function just fine.

You are probably pretty close to right: 3 drinks a day is probably 1 too many, but a lot of us drink 3 a day and I don't think we would be considered alcoholics, functionally or otherwise.

Sorry, but that's not a statement I think most alcohol dependency specialists would agree with.

For some people 3 drinks a day is way too much, for others it is not. Remember, the effects of alcohol vary widely in different people, depending on factors like gender, weight, age, physical condition, emotional state, and whether there are any chronic illness or medication issues. And dependence on alcohol has both mental and physical components, as well as social implications.

Rather than looking at quantity consumed and how frequently, I'd look more to associated behaviors to answer the question of whether a person has an alcohol dependence, for instance...

If this person is going to a social opportunity which does not include alcohol, does that present a problem for them? Are they going to feel the need to load up before going? Maybe take along a flask? Keep some alcohol in the car that they get to on "smoke breaks."

If taking a prescription medicine that warns not to drink alcohol with it, do they drink anyway? When ill, do they still need to have their drinks anyway?

If they unexpectedly run out of their accustomed alcoholic beverage, are they OK with foregoing a drink for a day, or must they immediately go find a replacement?

Do they only drink once or twice a week, but when they drink they always get really drunk?

Do they say their limit is 3, say, but they regularly overpour their drinks and make "mistakes" in counting so they're actually drinking a lot more than they admit to?

Do they say they're going to the kitchen to "check on the meatloaf" or make other excuses so they can have an extra drink out of sight of others?

Do they habitually drink to the point of impairment, rather than stopping sooner?

Does their behavior or demeanor change drastically when they drink, like becoming argumentative or overly flirtatious?

If they were offered a free vacation which included two weeks with no access to alcohol whatsoever, would that be an automatic deal-breaker for them?

And so on...

Get the point? It's not so much a question of how many a day is too much, but a question about how much people's behavior is affected by their drinking habits and patterns.

And in particular, if there is any denial or deception about their drinking... like telling their doctor they have a glass or two a day when it's really three or four, that's a strong indication of a dependency.

When you find yourself asking if you should cut back, and admit that you are having a hard time doing it, then you have already identified that you have a problem.

three drinks per day is not too much. i don't have a source, but i believe three drinks a day not only won't hurt you, but can also be beneficial. it's on the upper end, but it still won't hurt you. it's when you hit 4, 5, or 6 and over a day is when the subtle benefits start to diminish and the adverse effects begin to kick in.

i don't drink during the week, but on the weekends i've been known to over-indulge. its mostly a seasonal thing. during the cooler months, i don't drink as much(except for the holidays)

Actually I probably drink more during the winter months because 1-it is cooler, 2-it is football season and 3- I am indoors 90% of the time.

Look here's the answer: If you cannot properly function after 3 drinks or remember what you did, then its too much. If you can do those things, you're fine (runs off to take swig out of pinot bottle )

3 drinks? Is that 3 beers, 3 standard drinks , 3 glasses of wine or what? Well in either case, it doesn't even get the ball rolling.

3 drinks is any of the above, yes. They all contain roughly the same amount of alcohol.

And if you read the previous comments about Blood Alcohol Calculators, whether three drinks is too much or not is primarily dependent on your weight and gender, so there is no generalization that fits all.

I think it depends on the individual.

If the individual is genetically addictive & potentially can be a danger to themselves as an alcoholic...
even 1 would be too much.

BUT

If that person can drink that whole bottle for that day during dinner at France & not be drunk, & usually don't drink unless at a social gathering or that person who needs that 1 beer with his dinner everyday & not drink till drunk...
well... they can have it anyway they want.

Self control is really the key.

P.S. Even when one have a great collection of liquors but find that joy in creating that drink than abusing it, what harm is there even in having 3 or 4 bars in their home?
