Well, PBR rates 3.01 out of 5 at Beer Advocate, whereas the BMC beers are clustered around 2.75. So it's a mid grade beer at best. Pabst also now owns Schlitz, once the largest selling brand in the world, (now produced under contract) which rates slightly higher at 3.14, and tastes noticeably better IMHO.

Schlitz tastes better since they went back to the 1960's recipe. On the whole PBR for the price is not a bad beer especially on a hot day. Those old time beers like PBR, Schaefer and Rheingold are not bad every once in a while as change of pace from the micros and imports; keeps you honest.

I wouldnt even call it a mid grade beer, its lower than that but to me it tastes better than the steaming yellow swill that America knocks back by the gallons.
I had Schlitz back in 2001 and didnt like it, have they changed the recipe since then ?

The story is that the original Schlitz recipe was lost after they drove themselves out of business with all the weird formula changes (continuous brewing process, YIKES!) and labor disputes. I mean, literally lost... gone for good. "Thought we had that around here somewhere. Ooops!"
Then when Pabst bought the brand there were a lot of attempts to recreate the recipe. Supposedly they finally got it right in 2006.
FWIW <shrug>

The new old Schlitz recipe (it's marked "classic 60's formula", or something similar, on the cans) is the best adjunct lager out there, in my opinion, but not by a huge amount. I can't taste a huge difference between most adjunct lagers- the differences are fairly subtle to me.
Schlitz is also the highest ranking adjunct lager on BeerAdvocate, all the way up at 3.63. Of course, it's still an adjunct lager, so if you don't like those, you're not going to like Schlitz regardless of its formula.
PBR is a pretty decent adjunct lager. It's certainly no worse than High Life or Bud, but I think the reason it is so popular has more to do with its cheap price rather than its taste.

PBR is not a bad beer, especially when I'm bar hopping on a budget. A lot of places I like to go will have pints for $2 a pop, not bad, and its not a nasty cheap beer either. Its not my favorite so I dont buy it on a regular basis, but I enjoy one every now and again.
But honestly, the way the cans look....it looks like something some trailer trash in Georgia or Alabama would drink and I'd be embarassed if I went to my local supermarket and bought it. I usually buy Shock Top

But Shock Top is also from the BMC group, so why so serious?
I've long since gotten over what others might think as I go through checkout. I mean, most of them are busy with their coupons and food stamps anyways, right? I buy what I want to buy.
